I have struggled for a very long time with swimming.  After months of terrible swimming, I bought the Total Immersion DVD and carefully mastered each drill.  After about 3 months I could swim 50-75 m but be gasping for air at the end.  I'd read on the forums about people who said, "It just clicked one day!"
And then one day it clicked for me!  I started swimming and I wasn't out of breath.  I kept swimming.  I did 150 meters, then 200, then 400, then I ran out of time.
This weekend I knocked out 3 x 500.
I'm still slow, but dang!  I can't say how excited I am.  And every time I get in the pool, I'm amazed that I can actually do it!

Awesome. I remember when it happened for me. All about relaxing and taking it easy. I am sure you could bang out a 1000 or 1200 now as well.

That is awesome! Great Job!  I was the same way when I started swimming back in January.  I couldn't swim down the pool 25yards with out pulling my head up and gasping, then when I could finally go 25 yards I was so winded I had to take a long break.  Then one day it finally clicked and I kept knocking off longer and longer distances without being so winded.  Is an awesome feeling

Keep up the good work!

Yippee! Congratulations! I remember that feeling too! I bet you'll be hooked now. Swimming is my worst event, but my favorite. There's nothing like the feeling of being able to swim the entire swim leg of a race without stopping.

Keep up the good work, and enjoy your accomplishment

Congrats! Im not quite you yet...been swimming for 3 months and can do about 450 yards with Just a few seconds of break between each 100. Not bad for someone who could only dog paddle in June. I plan to do my first tri in Oct.  I think I will take your plan this winter and buy the video. Then I will be so ready for next season! Hope my results are as favorable.

Great work!  The exact same thing happened for me, everything just sort of clicked and I felt like I was floating on water the entire swim...what an awesome feeling it is!  There's still a lot to be learned, you'll be amazed at the distances you can cover and the speeds you can attain as you further progress (seeing people post 1:10/100m splits at an IM still amaze me), but I don't think anything beats that first swim when you just 'get it'.  Congrats!

The Total Immersion Easy Freestyle did it for me as well. After watching the DVD several times and trying the drills, I started feeling more relaxed. One day I went to the pool and just started swimming to see how long I could go. I took my first break 30 minutes later. Now I just have to start working on bringing down the times.
