Subject: trainer tire/wheel

Hi there,
I use my trainer a lot in the winter though living in CO there are days that riding outside is an option. I hate the idea of having to switch tires back and forth and am wondering what the cost would be to buy a different wheel for the trainer. Switching out the wheel would be so much easier. I guess I would have to buy a new cassette as well. Does that sound correct? I don't want to spend a lot of money however. I am curious if other people do this and if so what type (brand/cost) of wheel  and/or cassette that they use. I would also be curious as to what type of trainer tire that people use, assuming that there are different ones out there.  I have a road bike.
Thanks in advance!

Use this tire and an old wheel off an old bike works great. http://www.trisports.com/coulspho.html

I have a regular tire and just use my regular wheels now (not a trainer specific tire, because I'll still ride it outside). I have the same 11/23 cassette on my nicer wheels so when I switch its super quick.Just grab some bombproof wheel off ebay for cheap and a cassette with the same ratio and your set.

Look around for cheap used wheel then get the trainer tire like mentioned above. If you get the trainer tire & cassette at probikekit.com it is usually cheapest place aroun. Cheap wheel if you bought it new would be maybe $80 add cassette if 10 speed and tire you probably could spend $200 or less too save yourself a lot of aggravation.

Do you have an old bike or a second bike you could just swap the wheel.

I switch back and forth as I have power tap wheel so I have gotten pretty good at switching the tire. If I didn't have a power tap wheel I'd do what you are suggesting.

My husband likes his Tacx trainer tire...about the same price (or maybe a few bucks cheaper) than the Conti trainer tire...only difference is the Tacx tire is blue and the Conti is yellow.  He was using just an old regular road tire, but quickly discovered that the rubber starts shredding off the tire and will gunk up a nearby wall in a hurry.

I highly recommend the Continental HomeTrainer tire; both me and my wife has that and it never slips, doesn't disintegrate due to heat and time and is very quite. We also have a very cheap extra wheel (buy the cheapest you can find... Nashbar brand can sometimes be found for well under $100 brand new; the weight doesn't matter at all as all you're using it for anyway is indoors or warmup before a race)

I just use my normal training tire - bontrager hard case. I guess it wears a little faster than on the road but it still lasts 1000s of miles without puncture problems. They're cheap too.

Thanks for all the responses!
I don't have an extra wheel or cassette. Where would I find the least expensive of both or should I buy a cassette that is at least comparible to my current cassette (My current cassette is a Shimano 11-25 10 speed cassette.) I do have some stock tires that I could use for the time being but appreciate the ideas about the trainer tires. I will have to check them out.
Thanks again!

I keep all of my worn out road tires.  These get use on the rollers.  I cannot think of why I would buy a trainer specific tire unless I had no other tires around.  I am not really worried about a flat on the trainer as there are no bumps in the road, and I am always near the tool kit and a replacement tube and tire.
