Subject: He's going the distance
Just wanted to officially announce I much prefer running a set distance as opposed to running for time. No thinking about speed, no calculating distance multiplied by pace divided by RPE over the square root of vertical distance, no checking my watch for the halfway point of an out an back.

This morning I just laced them up and ran for 5 miles. Didn't care how fast or slow, or how long it took. Just run for fun. It reminded me of my early running days when I didn't know anything, when I didn't need a purpose for every run; no speed work, no recovery runs, no LT, no LSD, no tempo, no strides, no fartlek, no repeats. Just go run 'cause it's fun. Of course, I did wear my Garmin and analyzed the results and was a bit disappointed when I saw that I just missed negative splits. But that's another story....

Way to go! I love those people that can put on their shorts and shoes and head out the door and run.I have to pick out the right socks, decide which shoes to wear, strap on my Garmin, heart rate strap, and mp3 player, hat, glasses, and fuel belt. Sometimes I feel like a pack mule. But that's the way I roll.

Of course but some people hate it.  Especially Z4 tempo runs

Everytime I head out the door for a run whether for a long/short/hard/easy one with or without a set training goal, I love it and it is fun. Specially nowadays that you can wear a gps, start it at the beginning and check the data later in case you care for it. You can run wherever you want, you can explore, you can enjoy the view, you can get lost in your thoughts, you can push yourself, etc. For me it isn't all that complicated to have fun when I run...

I don't run by either time or distance. I typically just run from point A to point B and return. The time and distance are whatever. I do measure it, but only so I know how much volume I end up with over a given period. I don't follow a plan either. If I've got a long race coming up and I need to do a long run, I do it when I feel like it, not on a particular day as a plan would indicate. There are days when I go out with the intention of running to one point and feel good so I keep going so instead of a roughly 6 miler I might end up with 8-10 miles or more.

LOL! (but, of course, you don't want MS for even 15 minutes - MS on a treadmill is a whole new world of FUN! )

It's funny, I've been thinking about the time versus distance question as I've been struggling to find a new plan. I love going for time because I set my timer and run, when it beeps I turn around and run home. No need to keep pushing to get to some point, if I'm tired I slow down and make it as far as I can, if I need to walk for 30" I do, whatever. No need to pre-plan routes, either, or to keep checking my Garmin to see how much farther I have. Easier to run in an unfamiliar area, just grab shoes and go until the timer beeps. I also find it MUCH easier to negative split this way, and I almost always do (except on the route with the massive uphill at the end). I do find it harder to know if I can make a loop, though - I have to know not only the physical halfway point but the exertion halfway point (what hills are left, etc.).

Hah, now my coach has to decide!!! Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!
