Being that i am in college and broke i asked my mom to get me a garmin but she got me the forerunner 405 with a speed/cadence sensor...is it what i need or should i exchange it for a 300 series.  I know this one is more expensive but is it better?

They both offer the same basic data information.
The main differences between the 405 and 305 (assuming you're considering the 305 and not 310X) is that the 405 actually looks like a watch as opposed to a laptop on your wrist, it has a "bezel" like an iPod to navigate the screens, and it uses wireless ANT technology- which means your workouts will automatically download to your computer when your Garmin gets within a few feet of the wireless stick. No plugging in or entering information or anything - it's pretty slick.

That being said, I have had many issues with my 405 and will be sending it back to Garmin this week for repair. They are very common problems I've heard from MANY other 405 users - involving the screen locking up when sweat gets in the unit (duh, we sweat when we work out garmin!) and the buttons being unresponsive. And just yetserday nothing was responsive at all, even with a 100% battery charge

Hmm...I'm starting to have the same problem.  Guess I'll be calling Garmin sometime soon.

Personally, keep it.

Give it a shot. It'll tell you the exact same info that the 305 will. The 310xt (new one) is too new to jump on and doesn't really help so much more than the 305 or the 405.

Garmin is really good about backing their products. If it fails for any reason, they'll generally help you out pretty well.

Set it up and go with it.

The 310 has ANT too.  IMO, it is overcomplicating everything.  Your a few feet away.  Hardline the thing.  The ANT software has been a little glitchy on my 310, but it does work.

Overall, it depends what you want.  "is it better?"  We don't even know what you need it for.  If you just want to bike and run and don't care about waterproof, being a poor college student, I'd vote for a 305.

You don't "need" a Garmin at all of any kind.  It is just really nice to have.  I'm a little lost if I don't have mine now that I'm so used to it...

Only if it's under the 1-year manufacturer's warranty.

If it is less than one year old, we will cover it under warranty. If it is more than a year old, there will be a flat rate repair charge of $99. Normally, it takes 10-14 days from the day we receive your unit to have it repaired and ship it back to you. Or, we can also do an immediate shipment. In this case, we would charge a credit card double the normal charge depending on if under warranty or not. It would ship out in 1-3 business days and take 5 - 7 business days to get to you. You can ship us the damaged unit whenever you like. Once we receive the device, we would immediately credit your card for the overage charge. If under warranty, you would be charged nothing after credit. If not under warranty, you would only be charged standard flat rate repair charge after credit.

I'd definitely return it for a 305 which is a little less money, and IMHO much better for multisport. I consider the 405 to be mostly a running watch with some "get-by" features for cycling. The 305 with a quick release kit and the screen size to display multiple things is great.

The 310 was a great upgrade to the 305 in my opinion, but these days I'd still go with a 305 for less cash (the only exception being if I had an ANT+ power meter but I digress).

I really like my 405, but not a great multi-sport watch.  To change from run-to-bike or bike-to-run, you have to go through many menu items.  In races, I use the 405 for just the run and use bike computer for the bike.  No problem with training though, just set to right mode before starting. The bezel does start acting crazy if you get it wet or sweaty, but it doesn't bother me too much.  It's really cool when you upload your route and see the overlay on Google maps and get to walk through your entire workout.
Battery life on 405 can be a problem.  I've had mine leave the GPS active when it should be off, and it drains the batteries.  Did my 1st century this past weekend and battery died 10 miles before I finished.  I never had a 305, so don't know how battery life compares.
Edited to add - My favorite feature on my Garmin is real-time pacing data.  Always had this with bike computer, but to have on the run is awesome.
