Subject: cateye computers
i'm looking for a cycling computer and so far the cateye strada wireless and micro wireless have caught my eye. are they reliable?

Not a fan of wireless myself, but have used only Cateye Astrales since the mid 90's as my cyclometer (on every single bike I've owned).

I have the Cateye Double Wireless on both my tri- and road bike ... and they are "okay". 

They are notoriously difficult to set-up in that the instruction manual is just plain horriblely written - couple that with a clunky system to set it up and it makes Polar look like an Apple product. 

There was some discussion about potential wireless "cross talk" that interfered with heart rate monitors, but I believe that has largely been worked out.

All of that said, Cateye is known for their reliability and regarded by many as one of the gold standards in cyclocomputers.

Keep your eye on Performance Bikes as they routinely have sales on cyclocomputers.

I also have the cateye double wireless (2 of them, actually), and my experience has been nothing but positive. The only time it's been a bother is in a race, when I forget to "wake up" the unit on the handlebar and get no information.

I didn't have any problems setting them up, and even doing the second one (some 2 years after the first, with no manual), I got it on the first try.

YMMV.

Both me and my hubby are currently using the Cateye Strada Wireless on our bikes. It works great and I like it just fine...except that I am now wishing I had cadence on it. So I'll probably be upgrading soon to one that has cadence.

I use the Cateye Astrale 8 for the past 3 years without even changing the batteries. 

Occassional glitch - mainly from the sensors getting loose from riding on bumpy roads etc.  No major issue.

Have an ancient Cateye Astrale on my mountain bike that has survived since the 90s; for my tri-bike I have a Strada Cadence. I got the Strada Cadence on sale for like $34; it's wired for speed and cadence, with basically one cable running up from the back wheel speed sensor and cadence sensor. No problems, simple and reliable, and gives me all the info I need.

Cadence on my double wireless just died -- speed is fine, cadence is always zero.  Cateye tech is all at Interbike, but I'll wait to talk to them before deciding if I need a new magnet ($1.87) or a whole new sensor ($65)...  Any advice welcome.

Just got a Cateye V2C a few weeks ago and love it!  Don't know how people live without Cadence! 

LBS didn't know much about it since it was so new...  they couldnt even change it from Kilometers to Miles.   Not sure what the issue was but did it myself in 5 minutes when I got home. 

 

Lets you see speed, cadence and time (or distance) all at the same time...  great feature.  

 

Display numbers are large and easy to see while riding...
