So I strap on my 15 year old Graber bike rack to the back of my SUV, load our bikes and head out to Camp Blanding. We ride a 44 mile loop around the lake, load the bikes back on the rack and then go in for a swim. Finished the swim and loaded up for the drive home. There we are driving along doing about 62 mph on a two lane road when I see my nephews bike "pop" up off the bike rack. I think I said, "Holy , your bike!" I slow down very quickly, pull off the road and my nephew jumps out and runs to the back of the car. Believe it or not, but the bike is hanging on to the rack by one of the brake cables! My nephew unhooks the bike so we can check it out and then starts jumping up and down when he realizes he is standing in an ant bed. I take the bike while he is slapping all the ants off his feet and start spinning the wheels. To our great surprise, both wheels are true and there is absolutely no damage to the bike. We can tell the back tire bounced a couple of time by some minor scrapes on the side wall, but that is it. I pull the vehicle up a bit so we can put the bike back on the rack while avoiding the ants. We get the bike back on, STRAP it down and go to get back in the vehicle. My nephew then notices that his wallet is laying there in the high grass where it obviously flew out when he jumped out of the vehicle. I would have felt pretty bad had things not turned out so well since he will be doing his 1st half iron distance race with me next weekend.

Glad to hear everything was ok. That would have totally sucked to screw up the bike, let alone a week before his event!

1) Buy a lottery ticket - NOW
2) If you're a member of a church, donate big this week. If you're not a member of one, find one and donate to it

Very glad everything turned out OK. Wish we had that on video--with the ants and the wallet. Too funny.

So, did we learn anything today? Please, always make sure the bikes are strapped down securely.

Whew- the bike, the ants, and the wallet. Terrible things could have happened with all three of those things! Glad your nephew is okay!

My lesson would have been "Always have the video camera handy"

Does no one care about the ants? Some of them probably died, all for a hunk of metal, plastic, carbon and rubber. Think about all of the poor ant families now without someone to bring home the bread.

I deeply cared about the ants. That is why I pulled up so they could go about the healing process and rebuilding their lives (and ant hill)!
