Subject: Aero vs. Weight

Im a short 16 year old that weighs 115 lbs.  I'm doing the 1/2 IM Kansas.

Right now i have rol race sl wheels: i think there great.

Now to the question:  Because i have a low weight to begin with any weight gain with a more aerodynamic wheel, would that slow me down more than somebody who weighed 200 lbs and created more watts than me?  Also, amore aerodynamic wheel would cause more trouble to a lightweight person in cross winds, correct?.

 heavier wheel = 1 lbs or ~ .0087 % of 115 lbs

 heavier wheel = 1 lbs or ~ .005 % of 200 lbs

With this math, it seem thats i would do best with the wheel i have, low weightish and medium aero.  Does this seem right?

not to hijack, but isn't 17 the minimum age to enter 70.3 Kansas?

I think JeepFleeb mentions the only thing you have to worry about regarding aero wheels (crosswinds and rim depth).  Weight of wheels may only be a factor in the most hilly of terrain.

I'm impressed with your interest and analitical mind, but the ratios you calculated of the weight of the race wheel to the weight of the rider has no bearing...  They have no relation to each other.

There is no relationship in efficiency in wheel weight compared to rider weight...

In general, aero trumps weight in all but the hilliest courses.  so you would be better off getting the most aero dynamic wheel you can (with consideration to rim depth and crosswinds), and not worry as much about weight - no matter what YOU weigh...

Good luck!

Im not disagreeing by what your saying... just maybe im not explaining it well enough

Two guys me(m), and some big ol guy(bog). m=115 bog=200>>lbs

(just making up numbers, no facts just using them for  explanation)

-- same wheels -everything is a constant except test subjects mass

case numero uno (1)

bog here produces 300 watts...

m here produces 300 watts...

i go faster correct ?

Case numero dos (2) -- same as before but (m) produces only 150 watts --(m) goes slower correct ?

Case numero tres (3) --  (m) produces 275 watts (bog) 300 watts

m still goes faster because difference  weight overcomes the differnce of watt output...?

if im am correct (feel free to point out flaws, its what im looking for) then an individual weight trumps watts, or speed and that speed effects the time difference between aero vs weight wheels.--

--response--read that big link with the sciency dude,  35min 10k = 264 watts ??? what is a common watt output for a 40k tt(plz name the speed)

also--my personal experience

stock wheels with allez elite >> switched to rol race sl(there great)

there is a huge weight difference but not very much in aero differnce.  i never feel any resistance when accerlerating.  I think will change your time by not using as much energy every time you push hard

completed 2 sprint tris and duatholon over the summer--won my age group- only one other guy came close --50 secs- but i did not have correct clothes for the transistions so i was hella slow there--this is what i did-- took off my jammer(swimsuit) put on some bike shorts-- then under armor--then bike shirt(to hold food) then put on socks- then shoes -sunglasses and helmet--next one took off everything(under armor was tough(sticky)) then put on a new shirt some new shorts and some running shoes.

Beat my other competitor in last 800 of the 5k.

Now i are you saying that you are a faster cyclist than me, thats what its look likes.  If you wanna brag do it some where else.   Joking-- good input, but according to some "predict your bike wattage with 10k runtime - i have can easliy produce 264 watts for expended amount of time, that any good?
