Subject: Aero advantage worth it?
I am having a hard time finding a tri bike bigger than 58-61.  I am 6'6".  Would it be better to use a road bike in a bigger size that fits better or just get the biggest tri bike i can find and train with it?  Would the aero advantages be better than the proper size and fit advantages?  Thanks for showing newbie love!

Proper size and fit are more important than aero.  There are people on this site who are your height who ride tri bikes, maybe they can chime in.  I'm sort of on the other end of that scale.

I used to ride bmx all the time and I figured that if i could ride a little 20" bike all day long a smaller tri bike would be ok?  I guess that wouldn't be the most efficient use of energy.

There are tri bikes that will fit you.

Have you had a bike fit? Do that first and then you know what geometry is ideal for you based on fit.

Too Tall -- the rider accounts for about 80% of the drag -- so a bike that enables you to be comfortable and well positioned will be the most aero choice.  Bike frames don't count for a material amount of drag when compared to the rider.

 Hope this helps,

I'm 6'7" and I ride a cervelo P2C 61cm...  No problem for fit.  I didn't even need to swap out any parts...

The bike (and race wheels, and aero helmet, etc) do provide an aerodynamic advantage, but it's just seconds per kilometer compared to their counter parts (non-aero).

The idea of tri bike, is to put the rider in a aerodyamic position for LONG periods of time and still be comfortable AND, more importantly, also handle better with the rider in the aerodynamic position.  Rider position is creates the most drag and is the biggest factor for efficiency.  (when I say position, that includes being properly fit by your LBS or coach for you needs).

Tootall I am 6'4" and ride a cervelo p2c 61 cm. Fit is good. I chose this bike because it had the highest steerer tube at 190 and it is made for the more comfort minded. You can get a custom frame for the same price with tri geometry.

I am 6'5" and ride a Giant Trinity tri bike in a size L frame which is the biggest frame they make.  My LBS had to put a different stem on it but I love my bike.  Although I am still getting used to being on the drops, I am starting to find it to be very comfortable to ride that way.  I would think you should be able to find a tri bke that fits even if they have to swap out a few minor parts during the fit.

recognize that one would often ride a much smaller "frame size" for a tri bike than for a road bike to achieve proper fit. go to a bike shop and have them fit you on some tri bikes.
