Subject: Wetsuit in a Pool?
Am thinking of using my new wetsuit in a salt water pool, just to get a few workouts in with it before my HIM (2 weeks away).

do any of you use a wetsuit in a pool? I really don't plan on doing this but maybe once or twice, 3 times max.

My guess is that the wetsuit will be fine in a pool, as long as i don't make it a habit...

Anyone?

The paper I got with the Xterra wetsuit said that chlorine voids the warranty.  Forgive my ignorance about salt water pools, but I'm assuming they don't need chlorine?

Xterra also says one pool swim to try out the suit is OK.

The real issue is the heat. I did a "test" swim of my first wetsuit in a pool just to get a feel for it and actually had some mild heat exhaustion going on. Never again.

I've never tried it, but I have seen a couple guys at LA Fitness swimming in theirs, getting used to it before their tris. I would think the chlorine would be tough on the material, but if you rinse it very well I don't see an issue. Salt water pools don't need chlorine and I would think it would be the same as swimming in the ocean? Good luck!

well, the good thing is that the pool heater is broken right now, so the water temp is actually pretty darn chilly! Lately, it's taken me a good 5 minutes to warm up...

Should not be too hot, hopefully...

I used my old wetsuit in the pool for years. It lasted me 6+ seasons.

I actually used my wetsuit tonight. I had a pretty long swim and no heat issues at all. Maybe that is just me

When I first got one, I wore it in a pool workout for just a short while, to make sure I'd know what it feels like.  It hasn't fallen apart yet...

Salt water pools DO have chlorine in them.  As I understand it (I'm not a chemist, though), one of the main culprits in a standard chlorinated pool is the high concentration of chloramines, which are what (primarily) damage clothing, irritate the eyes, etc.  Chloramines are present in much lower concentration in salt water pools.  I can report, anecdotally, that my swim suits do last longer when I'm swimming more in salt rather than in a traditional pool.  (I swim in both.)

Perfectly fine and normal. Will draw some looks from non-tri swimmers, but keep them wondering ans swim on. You will get hot, so keep it under 1,000 yards. My YMCA pool is 83 degrees and I was gettign hot after that distance and took it off.

Yea be careful of overheating. I've done it a few times when I was in college because the ocean was too far away to get in a practice swim with the wetsuit. But it is much much more uncomfortable. So my advice, if you decide to do it, is a) prepare yourself mentally for being really hot, and b) drink lots of water before hand and bring a big waterbottle with you in your lane.

Also, I wouldn't recommend doing a full-throttle workout. Personally I just do about 1500 - 2000m or so, and I don't worry too much about pace either, because of the heat.

Did a 1000m swim this morning and I kept having to tug at the collar a little to let cool water in! it sure got warm quick!! after that initial 1000m, I took off the suit and was surprised at how cool the water was!

btw, I felt fast in the wetsuit...and that while hardly expending any effort...big, big difference.

My sister has used one for years.
She teaches kids swimming lessons. The pool is chlorinated and she has never had a problem.
