Expert  1203  |  Subject: Louisville IronmanI am no where near ready for this event and believe it's 2 years off. Having said that, I did volunteer to help out. Just thought I would post here that they are still looking for probably 100+ more volunteers to help out during the event. I am doing Water Entrance Security although I wrestled between that and Bike Catcher. Both sounded like fun but I figured I would be done by 9 so I can watch the winners at the finish. |

And on the day of the race I'm bike catching for a while and then doing chip retrieval at the finish line. I think I even signed up to help at the awards banquet. I just did the bike catching last year, and it was a BLAST!!! I also encourage anyone that can to volunteer. I met so many cool peeps! |

I caught Luke's bike, and took the overall winners timing chip at the finish. Met several great people along the way. I heard nothing but compliments from the athletes about Louisville. I'm beat. |

For logistical reasons, my support crew consisted of my Dad and my two boys (my wife delivered our 3rd son on the Monday before the race). Before this weekend, my Dad thought the idea of IM was plain silly/crazy/stupid. But, by the end of the weekend, he was impressed. Impressed by the whole event, from the production put on by IM, to the range of athletes struggling on the course, to the army of volunteers giving of their time, always smiling. It's not easy to impress my Dad (let alone change his mind about something!) but the folks at IMKY did it. For me, that was awesome! |

The Swim Start was much more frantic than I had figured and the water looked crowded. After the swim start I was moved down to the railroad crossing to warn and direct people across these tracks. That was pretty crazy at times with cyclist bottles flying out of their cages and landing in the middle of the road creating a whole new hazard. Some stopped to retrieve them and others just left them and we would kick them off the road as quickly as possible. |

After finishing my shift, I went down to 4th street and ate dinner with my family. I watched the finish line for a few hours and saw sjweber finish. I was somewhat expecting people to be collapsing and just out of it at after 15+ hours on the road, but instead the finishers looked awesome, smiling from ear to ear. Every time I think about the expressions on the athletes faces, I start smiling. |
