Someone mentioned in another thread that you may not be able to get to your special needs bags during the IM.

Which got me thinking, if anyone has had this happen to them.

So... when you stopped for your special needs bags, were you able to get to it? If you were not able to get to it, why not? I have made it so options can be added to the poll- so you can say why you were not able to.

That makes no sense to not be able to get to it.  What's the point of having a SN bag if you can't get to it?

I was able to get to mine.  The SN area was just before the turn around on the course, so they would see you and get your number and have it ready for you after you turned and got back to the SN area 10  minutes later.

I WILL add that I don't think I could get to it AFTER the race.  I think they tossed them so you wouldn't want to leave or put anything in it during the race and expect to get it back.

Well I'm just not sure. Thus the poll.

As ATXtri said in the other thread...

Be forewarned, you may not be able to get a hold of your special needs bag.

So I'm just curious to find out if someone has not been able to get to their special needs bag DURING the race.

By the way she said it, I thought maybe it's a common occurrence or something?

I didn't use it on the bike and did on the run. I got both back after the race at Lake Placid last year. At Lake Placid sn on both bike and run are very close to transition and I think easier to handle as it is a loop course and sn for each are across the street from each other and maybe 5' walk from transition/finish line area.

Well, I meant DURING the race.

For example... you needed to get your nutrition from your run special needs bag, but you were unable to.

I think the concern is not that you can't get to it, but that something might happen where it's misplaced, lost, put in the wrong box, etc.

I can understand the concern, and I was self sufficient on the bike, not because I thought it wouldn't be there, but because I didn't want to "have" to stop if I didn't want to (and not from a time perspective, but from a racing perspective).  This way, I had the option to stop or not (I didn't)

I did stop on the run.  Twice actually   (IMAZ)

ETA at IMAZ, you drop run SN in the boxes at the SN station before the race, and they don't get moved.  The bike SN get loaded into trucks and brought to SN.  Possible for SN to get lost?   yes.  Likely?  I doubt it.   NAS/WTC run pretty frickin tight ships, whatever else anyone thinks about  them

Why limit it to finishers??   Perhaps someone didn't get it and wasn[t able to finish??

Yup...definitely during the IM...haven't heard of anyone having issues with that during the race.

But as far as collecting them afterwards, the IM folks actually explicitly say that you might not get your special needs bags back post-race...but both me and my husband got our bags with no problem.  In IMFL we were able to get our run bag that night (2 loop course, so SN was at the finish line) and our bike bag the next morning.  They just put them in big cardboard boxes to sift through but no one was really monitoring it.  They told everyone in advance not to put anything valuable in them that you really want back because they couldn't guarantee it.

Well, I just meant I didn't want people who had not done an IM.. speculating on if they could get their special needs bags during a race. I'm fine if DNFs answer the question as well.

I believe the other thread was referring to a non-NAS/ WTC event.

As for me no problems at all. A volunteer was actually standing there holding it for me when I approaced the SN area, both on the bike and on the run.

No problems getting it...but being a "planner" I made sure I could still finish the race without it...just in case!

At IMFL last year, not only did they have it ready, the volunteer helped me pour stuff from one bottle to the other.

I cannot say enough about how helpfull the vollunteers were at IMFL.  They were wonderful.

I didn't bother with my bike SN bag in Lou(only had emergency items in it), but on the run they had it ready by the time I came by. I knew I had a bag of potato chips in there and was looking for some salt, so I grabed them on the way by.
