Subject: How much time is spent training?
I'm just wondering how many hours a week typically is spent on training? I guess this question is more targeted at those who are NOT doing HIM's or IM's. ( I'm NOWHERE near that level, and can only imagine how much dedication that takes)

I am still trying to do both resestance (i.e weights) training, and cardio (swim, bike, run). At some point in the near future, I'd like to be able to be a OLY distance, or finish in the top qtr on sprints.
Between a job, kids, house, blah, blah, blah time gets a little limited. I do know that if it's a priority, there are ways to make the time, and I do. So I'm courious on what are some of you put in time wise each week? Thanks.

~ 4 hrs per week.  i've done 3 sprints this summer, with one more to go.
I will spend a little more time in training for next year with  an Oly or 2 planned, and maybe a 70.3.

I just started training in June and have 3 super sprints this fall. I plan to do a full sprint , double sprint, and an Oly next year.

I "typically" train twice a day Monday - Friday, Saturday off, and 3 hours Sunday.  Sometimes take an extra session or day off depending on how I feel.

Monday/Wednesday/Friday
4:00 am - rise and shine!
4:15 am - walk the dog (for wake up/warm up)
5:45 am - swim, 1 hr
6:30 pm - strength/hand weights, 50 min

Tuesday/Thursday
4:00 am - rise and shine!
4:15 am - walk the dog
4:45 am - run, 1 hr varies
6:00 am - abs, 10 min
6:30 pm - bike, 1 hr

Sunday
6:30 am - long bike w/ run brick, 3 hrs and growing

I never miss a morning session, but evenings are harder because I'm just simply exhausted from the work day and from getting up early.

I'm going to be changing this up to accomodate more running after last sprint; will likely replace a swim and a bike with running and take Mondays off (not sure yet).

For my sprint this year, I think I maxed out around 8 hours.  For the OLY I did two months later, I maxed out at 11 hours.  With most weeks being in the 7-9 range.  I think in the end it depends on your goals and your abilities.  The training plans on BT are broad enough to allow you some flexibility (2x per week vs. 3 x per week, discipline focused, etc.)

Nothing but sprints this year, looks like I'm averaging 8-10 hours per week in recent months.

If you have limited time and your goal is to improve in triathlon, consider dropping the weight training.

It really varies.  Do you just want to finish?  Do you want to be competitive? Do you have a background in any of the sports?

Some people can do an Ironman on 6 - 10 hours a week, for others they train over 20 a week, pros train closer to 30+.  Based on my experience to be able to race and not just finish you should be around 4 - 5 for a sprint and 7 - 8 for an oly.  There are exceptions but that is what I would consider the minimum to allow yourself to race and not question your ability to both push your limits and finish.

I put in about 10-14hrs each week.  A couple 40 mile bike rides eats up 5 hours or so.  I think I'm doing OK for an Oly, but will increase biking time next spring to prep for an HIM or two.

WOW - I'm pretty sure this is more than most HIM workout plans call for.  I'd think you are already set for an Oly - way over trained for sprints.

4:15 am - walk the dog

Is that like dropping the kids off at the pool? I schedule that too.

To the OP, this above is not the norm for someone in their first year of tri's. How much time spent training depends on current fitness level, goals, etc. I've been averaging only 6-7 hours this but I've been focusing on running events. With 1 oly. and 1 sprint this year to go I am ramping my traing up buy about 2 hours per week with a peak at 9.5.

if your goal is just to do a sprint or olympic 8 - 10 hours a week would be plenty.  In fact, I really see no reason that you would need to go much above 8-hours imo.

4-6 hours usually, on S/B/R. Sometimes a hair more, lots of times less.

I usually aim for 8-10 hours per week.  This seems to be enough for the sprints and OLY's I have competed in this year.  I plan to up this slightly next year for a HIM.

summer training, when focusing on sprints is normally around 16-22 hours a week.

8-12 over the winter when not in season.

trying to get better about logging everything on here, and getting away from a paper log i use right now.
