Subject: Going to start looking for new bike.. need some suggestions and plenty of questions
I know most folks hate these kind of threads.. but I am going from a 29er mountain bike and want a road or tri bike for Tri's... I have been training and reading magazines and forums, and trying to learn all I can... so now I am ready to grab a new bike...

I probably want to keep this around $1500.. so I am looking for the best setup for that price.... I am not in an area that has many dealers near me.. Trek, Felt, Cannondale are near me.. but I am willing to travel to ATL and JAX to look.. so what I am asking is give me some models that I need to check out in person... I feel like several brands out there that are popular are quite overpriced for the component package you get (referring to road bikes.. Trek for instance in there entry level seem to fit this).. but there are a lot of brands out there that I am simply not familar with either.. Which ones are "overpriced" in the $1500 range or so? The Felts? Treks? Cannondales? (I need advice)

(I understand the whole fit, feel, ride, and sizing thing...) just need some help choosing which "dealers to visit" since I will have to travel several hours.

Should I get a entry-roadie..(which would be less well less than the $1500) and put the aero clip on and ride for a year of so and then upgrade?

Should I go ahead and get the Tri even though it push my limit or may go over.. like the 2 below..

I saw some "what looked like" great deals on Quintaroo and Kuota in there entry level Tri's in the sub $2000 range.. should I splurg to get those even though I am a beginner? Or am I as a novice not going to notice any difference in a those and $1000 Cannondale/Trek/Felt roadie with aero bars?

I am not wanting this thread to be a "bash" on certain brands (so if you have a differing opinion than someone else in the thread, please direct your opinion to me.. and not to an argument with the other poster.. as I am wanting ALL the opinions I can get) even if they are different.. which will help educate me a good bit..

Thanks in advance..

btw: I am 5' 10 195lbs (and losing still) in case anyone has a sweet deal to offer (just in case)!

It's all in what you like.  I rode a $3500 tri bike for 6 months.  I hated it.  I switched over to a roadie and never looked back.  It was the best decision I ever made.

If your looking for a sweet deal on a used Cervelo that would probably fit you like a glove send me a pm.  I'm selling mine.  You can see a picture of it in my album under The Clyde Ryde.  Plus I'll get you waaaay under 1,500 and you'll get Ultegra to boot.

Give us a little more background into your tri - training life and where you want it to go?

On the one hand there is no reason you can't ride a Mt bike for tri's and training for years and never need to switch.  For others they want a tri specific bike strait out of the box.  What I am getting at is what have you done?  What do you want to do in the near future?  What differenc will a new bike make?  Are you trying to be competitive?  How fast/far do you ride, how often? What do you want to do in the far future?

Personally, I don't like spending lots of money on equipment till I know why and what I am spending the money on/for and it moves me in the direction I am looking.

I completed my first Tri (a super sprint) this past Sunday, with only 3 weeks of training under my belt... but it was a great "learning" experience..  I have my first Sprint in 30 days... so that gave me only 8 weeks total to train.  I am ultra competitive and have always been very athletic in multiple sports which continued into my 30s...  Finally gave up my traveling sports (flag football and softball) about 2 years ago.. to be home with my family, and got out of shape....  and that has driven me to Triathlons.. and I am hooked on the training.  I have a USAT trained coached here in my town working with my training schedule to help me get ready for my Sprint... and sure I want to be competitive (on the amature level)... They write our times down and rank us and post the results... so yeah it does matter...  but do understand it will take some time and tons of hard work and discipline....  I am training hard and plan to do a Sprints next year early... while running 5k and 10k and work my way up to the Olympic Distance by summer.  Half marathon by end of next year, and HIM in 2010...

As far as road vs tri bike... that is my problem, not sure which way to go... but I do want to compete, so I am not going with the 29er anymore..  I don't want the "base entry" level as I know I will only want to trade up way too soon.. and the "boss" or "wife" would hit the roof... but I also don't need the best of the best anytime soon yet either..

It sounds like your competitive side is pushing you harder to make a decision sooner rather than later   I know how you feel.

IF you are only riding for training and Tri's (mostly on your own?) then I would go strait to a Tri bike.  IF you ride on the street with groups and plan on doing more riding events as part of your training I think I would probably start with a road bike with aero bars.

Personally, I think you should stick with what you have currently and get a full season under your belt (at least till the middle of next year).  By then you will have a better understanding of what you want, how much you are willing to spend and understanding of what the bike will do for you now and in the future.

The difference in your times for a sprint on your Mt. Bike compared to what they would be on a nice Road bike or Tri Bike is only going to be a few minutes.  Wait till you know exactly what you want and buy it when you are ready.

Just my .02

Based on your goal of being in the $1,500 range I would suggest the Cervelo P1 or Felt S32 as tri bikes. They're aluminum bikes with proven geometry.

If you're still debating the tri vs. road frame you might want to look at the Cervelo S1. It's a bit more money ($2,200), but again proven geometry with an aero downtube and Ultegra group set.

I just got a Fuji Aloha for $1150, and I've seen it for less on the mainland.  For $1500, I got the bike, an awesome fitting, Keo's, Sidi's and a Polar cyclometer.  I'm set for a while and I couldn't be happier with the bike.

Check out the Quintana Roo Kilo. It has Dura Ace and Ultegra componets. Have mine for 2 years and 4000 miles and love it.

Good info guys..  I will find dealers for those models you have suggested.. and check them out in person..

I did like the Felt S22 in person.. but it was too big for me, so I didn't get to ride it... but I have found on in my size at a very good price. Any negatives or drawbacks on this one..

I love look of the QRoos Teqillo and Kilo...  any thoughts or negatives on those, as I have never seen them in person.

How would the Felt S22 stack up against the Kilo and Tequillo?  Specs wise would you consider them very similar or does one offer a better price/value for what you get.

I just ordered the Fuji Aloha in the Chicago area for $1050 plus an additional $80 in store credits so netted out it is an awesome deal at $970.

Bought it at Performance Bike which has locations all over the US - they have been great, I was a little concerned going to a chain store - but they were more friendly and gave me more time & attention than the 4 other LBS' I went to.

The Fuji Aloha should be something you look at strongly - this is the 2008 model which Fuji has in stock in droves in their warehouses, anyone selling Fuji can get this for you. The 2009 model is a total refresh and starts in the $2000 range so make sure you look at the 2008 Aloha.

Why not look at the Cervelo S1?
