Subject: What causes side aches?

I don't know if it's my breathing or drinking too much liquid, but I've done two Sprints in the last month and 1/2 and on both I've gotten bad side aches. My first it was on the run right after I got off the bike. My second one, I got one soon after I got on the bike.

I have another sprint in two weeks. I want to find out what is causing it so it doesn't happen again. It really effected my run time.

Anyone know?

For me, it was lack of fitness.

I would push it too hard on the bike, blow it out... and get a side cramp immediately on the run and it wouldn't stop until the race was over.

Once my fitness level improved, my side cramps went away.

I agree with Karen, but only from personal experience. My stitch appears to be in my diaphragm, and I've learned to use it as a governor. When I feel it come on, I know I'm reaching the point where my effort is approaching the limits of my fitness, and have learned to back off at that point.

I know of no scientific basis for this, but it works like that for me.

There are two reasons why I get side stitches:

1). Irregular/Shallow Breathing while running
2). Having too much in my stomach while I am trying to run

In either case, they rarely slow me down as I now know how to make them go away fairly quickly.

I don't often get them because of a full tummy any more and if I do, like Karen and Bear, it is usually caused by pacing too hard. (Causing my GI System to Shut Down) I can usually tell what the cause is by what side of my belly the stitch is hitting. Alternatively, I never eat anything and rarely even drink for shorter distance races. (Like 5k - 15k)

To get rid of them, what I do is focus on taking full and complete breaths and belly breath.

More often then not for me, it is caused by shallow/irregular breathing. If I focus on a regular breathing rhythm with complete breaths from the belly, they usually go away within a 100 yards or so. I have found that speeding up also helps as it increases my oxygen needs and forces me to take more complete breaths.

If I find that my GI system was completely shut down, the only thing left for me to do is stop eating/drinking, slow down and try and push through it as well as focus on good breathing. (And if I am lucky, it will go away)

Mine comes from the monkey that seems to be on my back after mile 15...

I cruising along, doing great, feeling good, going fast, but he's out there hiding in some bush or tree.  I hit mile 14 or 15 and he gets me...

OR, it could be I'm pushing my limits of fitness.  But I think it's the monkey.

There is an article in Triathlete Mag a couple issues ago that said it typically is a diaphram issue.

It talked about the main way to solve it is to actually strengthen you core.

Totally agree.  He goes for my legs all the time in longer races.

Yep, that's him.  I could pick him out of a line-up any day...

I had the same problem my first two races. As others have implied, I believe my issue stemmed from me pushing harder during the race than I was used to in training. I began to get a cramp during my 3rd race and I pulled back just a little bit and it didn't bother me anymore.

Since then, I have done a 15-minute core workout 3x a week to try and strengthen those muscles so I don't cramp up again. So far so good.

To be honest, I think the doctors really are not so certain about this.  You do hear most people say that it is breathing related and the diaphragm etc.  Core strengthening probably helps a lot, as well as practicing a fair amount at race pace so that your body is conditioned well for the heavy breathing (particularly the VO2max kind of workouts).  I am very thankful, I used to get them when I was much younger, but have not gotten them for some time now.

I find that if I breathe in when the foot that is on the same side as the stitch hits the ground that they go away fairly quickly. If that makes any sense... Now the clavicle stitch...I have no idea how to get rid of those! But I avoid them by eating bananas and hydrating. Am I the only weirdo that gets a stitch in her clavicle when running?

The only times I have gotten side stitches are too much water/food in the belly. I try to avoid drinking or eating the last 20 min of the bike and do not hit water on the run until I have been at it for about 15 min or so. However, in Las Vegas the temp was 100 F + and I had to hit the water as much as I could to stay hydrated and just suck it up for the mild side stitch that resulted. I will be doing a Mary in cooler temps and hope to ballence the water intake much better for that.

I have my first 16 mile run next week, we have no bushes so I am thinking that monkey won't find me... unless he is a sand monkey and hides in holes in the ground like snakes. /emote looks around suspiciously.

You just might be.    I get one in the front of my right shoulder though, so I'll be weird with you.  All I have to do is drop my hands to where I feel them brushing my waistline as I run and slow down for a minute or so for the pain to go away.

I don't know if it's my breathing or drinking too much liquid, but I've done robbed two Sprints liquor stores in the last month and 1/2 and on both I've gotten bad side aches. My first it was on the run right after I got off the bike fled the scene and heard the store clerk shooting at me. My second one, I got one soon after I got on the bike shot back at the cops.

I have another sprint robbery in two weeks. I want to find out what is causing it so it doesn't happen again. It really effected my run time.
Anyone know?

9mm?
