Subject: Ironman Louisville
Is this a good race for the first?  I noticed this race has not sold out and was wondering how it relates to others.  I was thinking of doing the redman or vineman, but I just noticed louisville is open right now.  I guess I could wait until next year, but who likes to wait>

Louisville will be my first.  I took it since it was open and close to NC.  I wanted it for the scenery on the bike ride.  as well I understand the spectators are tremendously friendly towards the athletes.  So good luck and hope to see you there.

I can't compare it to others.  It was my first.  I had a great time.  I guess the scenery on the bike course is nice.  I didn't really notice.  It is definitely a fun course to ride -- a little bit of everything (a few nice hills, some fast flats, big roads, small roads).

Good for a first.... sure, I just did it as my first.  Can't compare it to others though.  It lacks the long hills that you will find on other courses (IMLP) and is definitely rideable.  In fact, I was wondering where the 6000+ feet of climbing were that I had worried about.

If you sign up for it, ride hills and train for heat + humidity (we got lucky this year)

I have done IMCDA, IMFL, IMAZ, IMLOU, and the GFT.Louisville is a great race, well run,(maybe the best run of all, it was/is run by WTC ,not IMNA) great venue, great finish, but it isnt "easy".

I think the GFT and IMLOU are the toughest ones I have done. I do live in Flatville so hills are alien to me, but it was hot and humid.

I hope to do it again, rumor is that it maybe gone in a few years.

Just curious....where did you hear that rumor?

 

I've not heard/read this rumor anywhere but I do remember that M-dot signed a 5 year contract with the city of Louisville to host the event (2007 - 2011).  I don't know if this is a typical contract length for all m-dot venues.  But I guess there is always the possibility that Luisville or M-dot will opt to not renew the contract after the initial 5 years.  Since the race has sold out 3 years in a row, my guess is both Luisiville and M-dot will be anxious to extend/renew the contract.

FWIW... there was a comment by WTC to the effect of "we will be back for as long as Louisville lets us".  Of course that is corporate speak, and it's not like they would let anything out of the bag, but I have not read or heard anything in the local media that points to an end after the initial 5yr. contract.

Yeah I was also looking for the hills....It was not a tough bike course.  I did absolutely love the bike course though.

The finish alone at IM Louisville is reason to do the race.  Louisville is a fun course.  The run is a bit boring but that is ok. 

Do this race you will enjoy it.

As far as the rummor about L-Ville being around.  Dont worry about it.

Personally I think the two biggest things about Louisville relate to the swim, namely:

The start
No wetsuits

If neither of those are an issue for you, then Do It.
