I would like a Garmin 305...

Master  1792    |  Subject: I would like a Garmin 305......but I don't want to pay that much. All I need to know is how far I've run and how quickly (or slowly) I got there. Is there anything less expensive. Thanks for your help! |

You can still buy the 201 and 205's but I think the 305 is the way to go. Plenty of 201's still online and on Ebay. The USB (305) vs. the Serial Port (201) is a big advantage. The 305 is smaller, picks up the signal and holds it a little better. My 201 did not like the water at all. The 305 is more resistant. I am guessing you'll pay approx. $90 for the 305. I paid $191.00 (free shipping) for mine a few weeks ago - fyi. So far, I love it. BUT I love Garmin product. Customer Service has always treated me well. I used my 305 just yesterday for a timed physical fitness test. While everyone else took off way too fast, I knew my exact pace, distance, HR, etc. and my pacing was consistent with my planned run. They even have a standalone system if you don't have/want to use an iPod Nano. The 301 is relatively inexpensive but any GPS will do if it can record a breadcrumb trail. I used to use a Garmin eTrex that I had. |

As I tried to say in piggpen35's thread, the 305 is great, has better reception, and is smaller than the 201/301. If I had to buy again today it's what I would get. But for the price-conscious, the 201/301 is a bargain for a perfectly fuctional device. I've enjoyed my 301 for nearly three years now. Since HRM capability wasn't on your want list, you can get the 201 for ~$90 shipped on ebay. |

In the training log, you can set up routes based on local maps of your area (very detailed). It gives precise distances and elevation gain/loss. I use that, along with my watch and standard HRM to do my training. The GPS would be nice for newer routes, but as long as I plan ahead and map them out, I can get the distances anyway.

Honestly, I would say no but I would purchase the 305 and then the quick release kit for around $25. That allows you to take it off your bike and simply snap it onto a wrist band.To comment on some other remarks people have made I believe the 305 is actually bigger than the 305 when you look at the weight and dimensions but only slightly. The 201/301 is definately wider but is narrower especially when you look at how the 205/305 wraps around your wrist. To the OP, get a 205 if you don't care about HR. That will save you a little bit. |
