I can believe it. I have been passed by recumbents while I was cruising along a nice stretch of downhill at about 45 or so. These bikes would pass me like I was standing still.

It's worth mentioning that the speed course offers no major downhills (rules prohibit anything steeper than -0.66%).

The speed record was accomplished within the following parameters:

170 foot drop in 5 miles = 0.6439% grade overall

And when you stop your bike, you can put your feet down. He falls over.

Watch John Howards paced land speed record of 152 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I believe that record has since been taken up to 166 mph:

I wonder how that would play out in traffic court... "Your honor, do you seriously believe I was doing 83MPH on a bicycle?"

I couldn't find much info on the new bike, but in 2006 they went from a bubble style cockpit to a camera to improve aero.

"As aerodynamic as Georgi has built it to be, the bubble still significantly increases drag, or wind resistance--enough to steal precious watts from Sam's legs, especially at anything over 70 MPH. At those speeds, Sam can feel the diffrence in the car-wax used on the outer shell."

He also goes on to say that at 75+MPH the wind seeping in from the gaps in between the cockpit pieces is a deafining roar.

I'm curious to know what gearing he is using? I saw a pic of the drivetrain in one of the links and his main crank is about 14" across.
