Subject: Friggin' screw!
WARNING: This is a rant so you'll probably want to leave now!

This past weekend, while out on a century, the bottom bracket in my road bike started to squeak, squeak, squeak... So the other night I checked: the torque on the cranks--fine; pulled the chain-rings, cleaned, lubed, reinstalled--fine. Yesterday I bought a BB tool and took the non-drive cup off then moved to the drive side/cartridge. I unthreaded that bad-boy all the way but couldn't get it out. I knew it was loose but the damn thing wouldn't come out of the frame!

So, I figured I'd throw it in the car and take it to the LBS today, with my tail between my legs. But, as I put the frame down in the car, I noticed the little screw that holds the shifter-cable guide on the bike under the BB housing. I thought, man that's a little screw but I wonder... So, I loosened the screw and sure enough out comes the BB.

That friggin' screw... I had forgotten all about it--not that I had ever had one keep a cartridge BB from coming out.

In any event, the BB is clean, lubed, torqued and good as new! :D

And, yes, I do feel better for getting that out! Thanks for listening, if you didn't leave after the first sentence.

This is greek to me. I'm so lost...I know nothing about the mechanics of a bike. I can change my tires if I get a flat (yes, a real flat) and I know how to take my pedals off. Thats about it.

What do you mean? I really like the saints. I'm wearing a fleur de lis necklace right now...wait, this might open a can of worms. Let the stone throwing begin...

Ah... So New Orleanians aren't the only ones that the Saints make suffer? interesting.....

I do enjoy cheering for the underdog though, good thing.

Your quote...about falling on the bike. My coworkers thought the same thing about me. It seems after every race or really long ride I have some new nasty bruise. I don't know where they come from, but I am a klutz. Probably from just loading and unloading my bike!

Ok....we've hijacked the thread enough.

Yeah, the trick is that you have to be able to screw both ways...

Uh... somehow that sounds so dirty.
