The deal is that the water at the university is pretty nasty and it upsets my stomach, so I tend to resort to sodas. What's a decent alternative that people have come across? FWIW, I drink 6-8 liters of water daily so proper hydration is not much of an issue.

Carry something like Nuun or EmergenC to put in your water (carry your own water bottle).

How about iced tea, fruit juice or just plain bottled water. Normally I'm againts bottled water but when you need it, you need it. There should be some vending machine around the university you attend. How about chocolate milk, latté, coffee or even herbal tea. I know, a whole day's worth of liquid is something to carry around. But you carry some of it in a cooler bag that you can put in your locker.

Obviously those things cost money and tap water was the cheepest choice on a tight student budget. But your health is your best choice.

I carry water from home because at work the water cooler was not cared for. It was giving me stomack spasms every evening until I stop drinking from it. Ok I have an irritable colon (is that the proper english term?). I talk to my boss who found out  the water cooler was not cleaned frequently enough. Changes have been made, but I still carry at least a bottle of water with me.

So maybe you should talk about it with other students and then ask the university administration if something can be done about it. And maybe see a doc to know if you have a condition.

Good luck and take care

It's a 1/4 mile walk from the closest student parking lot to my lab and I have the usual compliment of a laptop and books to schlep as well, so I would like to avoid carrying a cooler again. I do bring water and nutritional drinks for workouts in my workout bag, but that pretty much takes up all available space in the backpack.

Funny, I had been drinking nothing but water and Diet Coke for so long that I completely forgot about juices and teas. Tea would require water, so we're back to the nasty univ. water for that.

My prof is trying to convince me to do my Masters under him, so maybe I can play that card to get him to split the cost of water delivery...

You can get a water cooler that's not too expensive (assuming you have a place to keep it), then just go to your local grocery store to re-fill the bottle(s) every so often. 10 gallons at our local grocer is $2.70. Yeah it's an extra trip to/from the car every couple of weeks, but the alternative is nasty water!

An alternative to regular soda? --->RW Knudsen makes a great juice spritzer, kinda pricey but tasty & all natural.

Or just soda + juice of choice, easy and pro'lly cheaper, could keep bottles in nearby fridge.  That's what I do when I'm in the mood for soda. (other than my husband's diet coke habit, we're a soda-free family)

The IZZE brand is really good - sounds similar. All natural, carbonated juice drink. Really yummy!

The more I think about it the more I think I really want water, and the water cooler idea sounds like a winner. I've been spending $1.25 a pop for a 20-oz diet coke and sometimes drinking two a day, so the cooler should pay for itself in no time.

Good choice, but don't forget to clean it from time to time.

Any chance you could add a filter system to the tap you now have access to?  You can get those for < $100 for a REALLY nice one and I am pretty sure they are available in your area if the water is that bad.

I also do not normally support bottled water, but that got me through college and the nasty dorm water, I found the cheapest stuff I could find and got it by the case.  The water cooler would have been a good idea, unfortunately our dorms banned them because someone had one and knocked it off the top which lead to a nice wet floor that dripped down to the floor below.

Any of the packet things you add to a water bottle are good as well to cover up a bad taste.

I drink sparkling water, usually lime or orange.  It has no calories and no artificial sweetners, but does give the soda mouth fizzies.  I buy it for 65-75 cents per liter at Whole Foods and Kroger.  For extra flavor, a splash of OJ, grapefruit, or cranberry juice is nice.

+1. Doesn't need refrigeration, and you can keep it at your desk if you want to.
