Total Time = 1h 21m 50s
Overall Rank = 44/304
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 13/67
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am, had coffee and set off for the race. Ate a banana and a peak bar on the way. I LOVE driving to a race. The roads are empty, it's still dark, I crank my XM and just chill.
Got there early so no lines for body marking. Saw Renee and Sue soon after I arrived and then Christine found us.

Event warmup:

Took my bike for a spin to go through the gears.
Sat on the beach and chatted with the BT girls.
Swim
  • 15m 20s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Well, the swim was fine, I guess. Lots of breast-strokers. I got off track a bit a few times. It was a bit choppy. I did bilateral breathing for the first time in a race and it went well.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

I left the shoes on the bike for the first time today too. No problem. I also chose not to wear socks for the bike. That went fine too.
Bike
  • 37m 38s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 19.77 mile/hr
Comments:

OK, I thought I did alot better on the bike and was really pissed that I averaged below 20mph. I was killing myself out there! Just about every time I checked I was going well over 20 mph. I am very disspointed with this time. My last sprint was a 15 mile bike and I averaged 20 mph, so you would think I eould do better than that on a 12.4 mile course!!
What would you do differently?:

I really don't know.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Had to put my socks on here. Everything else went smoothly.
Run
  • 26m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow, I thought I was really slow on the run but it turns out it was my best effort of the day. Something went wrong with my watch, so when I got to mile one it said 15 minutes!! I didn't know what was going on at that point, but I guess I assumed I was going slower than I should even though I knew it wasn't 15 minute mile slow!
Kept my heart rate between 186-192 (LT is 188) for entire run. I am very close to my goal of an 8:45 sprint pace.
What would you do differently?:

Have better focus. My mind wandered alot during the run.
Post race
Event comments:

My feeling about this race was that I underperformed. I can't believe I wasted a taper on this so-so performance. I left this race feeling a few things:
I'm sick of being a MOPer. I'm ready to start placing.
That means I must start doing more running speed work.
I am also considering getting a coach.
I know the girl that placed 1st in my AG from the YMCA. She invited me to start coming to track practice on Tuesdays. She also said that when she started doing tri's she was running at my pace and now she is obviously much faster (this is her third season). That gives me hope that if I work at it, I can be placing by next year.

Do not be so hard on yourself. If nothing else you have learned something about yourself. Taking the knowlege and applying it wil make your "lack luster" performance worth while. Good luck on the training and keep enjoying yourself.

Chick, while you are an awesome triathlete, I think math is not your strong point. 44 out of 304 (top 15%) overall and 13 out of 67 (top 20%) AG is not middle of the pack.

I have no doubt you'll be placing next year. You had a terrific performance. You should be very proud of yourself.

Jessica's blazing!

It was a great time.   I saw you on the run.

Is that the keys to the new Livestrong Jetta?  :-)

I'm with Renee.   You're definitely not MOP!  You are well within the top 1/4, and very nearly in the top 10%!!!

Those cobbles really suck time from you, you've got a slow down on 'em.  I remember it from SA's and I can't imagine having to do that 4 times.

Kick ass race, nothing to be down on yourself there.  You executed solidly.  Keep working and you'll get to the pointy end of things sooner than you think.    I highly recommend coaching, if you can find a good coach who fits your style ( and vice-versa ).  Working out with the girl who took 1st is probably not a bad place to start.

Congrats!

( And nice Javelin uniform too! )

Hey great race...I feel your frustration tho..like we talked about...hope you go the rest of the pics...I love that pic of you on the bike that you posted ...I think the bike times were a little slow beacuse of the loops and turning and stuff.  Also it depends on where the timing chip mats etc were placed.  At Danskin they had them really weird...Glad you were happy with your run. Just keep training and BTW you are a FOPPER

I hate to be a poo pooer, but does her helmet look a bit high?

anyways...  I started track workouts on Thursdays with a group now.  The leader's an IM athlete.   I thought about the Interbay Y thing too.  They have one here in Brandon, but it's extra on top of the 74 membership, (as well is the Masters swim), so.....

I haven't been doing the track long enough to notice a difference.

Keep on that IM training

Great Job!!

You were flying and so fast. Super race~

From other BTers recommendation, I found a coach, and it has helped me improve a lot. Find a good match and talk with others...and you'll be getting faster at everything.

Thanks for sharing your RR!

I just realized that I met my goal of running an 8:45 pace in a sprint! For some reason I was thinking I ran 8:47, but it was 8:29! Woohoo!
And thanks for the kind words and advice everyone!

Hi Jessica

I enjoyed your race report and had some comments so here I am with my first post First, your bike time was very good. All those turns (and there were a ton) really slow down the average. I was very conscious of making sure I took the turns pretty fast and then accelerating out of them. You can pick up a lot of time doing this because this is where a lot of athletes will slow down. As you've already indicated, doing track workouts will absolutely help your run time. You will probably be amazed at how much time you can drop. Tempo runs will also help, as will short fast bricks off the bike (5-10 min really fast, it doesn't have to be very long if you're training for sprints). Anyways, congratulations on your race - it was HOT!

What do you mean you're disappointed with your bike??  That's a great time...every race is different, with different racers, wind conditions, road conditions.  can't compare 'em...and you may end up medaling in a race very soon-all depends on who shows up!  You nailed your run, and your swim was stong as well.  you did great!  track time will definitely boost your running (though you far exceeded your goal)

Hey Jessica, nice pics.

It's good to hear that you noticed that you ran 8:29 min/miles. I was going to comment on how that is better than your goal. Great run. And I echo the comments that you are not a MOPer, you are a FOPer. Keep it up and I'm sure you'll be placing sooner than you think.

You had a great race! 44th out of 304 is in the 15th percentile. That is definitively FOP.  And your age group was incredibly competitive.

Looking forward to Cayuga Lake!
