Well I tried to let my season end, but I just couldn't do it. I tried to listen to the advice I had gotten in my prior post, but it just wasn't working. Then out of nowhere my brother calls and says he is getting married in Monterey November 1st. I frantically search race databases and behold: The San Francisco Triathon on Treasure Island is one week later. So signed up. Never say die!

I hear ya'.  This is my first season and 2 were not enough.  I signed up today for one on Oct 12th.  That could be an interesting swim at the Jersey shore.   At least the run and bike are supposed to be completely flat.

I know the feeling.  This was my first season, and I tried to end the season 2 weekends ago.  Due to a DNF in that race (2 flats, 1 spare tube) I had to go find another race.  Had my first Oly last weekend, and also set a record for myself.  8 competitive sporting events in a year is more than I have ever done, unless you count soccer when I was 7-12.

Good luck to both of you with your upcoming races.

I'm doing the SF Tri as well.  Be sure to read the race reports.  I'm hearing from many people who have attended that the ride is treacherous.  The coach at a clinic I attended last weekend said there are 22 90-degree turns per lap and there are 6 laps.  Potholes and tree roots are also in heavy supply.  Lots and lots of crashes and very busy ambulances.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in getting together at the race.

I'm going to be in NYC October 2-5 (I leave tomorrow).

I just found out there is a duathlon in Central Park the morning of the 5th...I'm currently investigating options on how to ship my bike so I can participate...

When I first looked at the map of the course this first thing that came to mind was that this was going to be a lot different than any one I've ever done. I feel my bike handling skills are good, but when someone goes down in front of you and you are down on your aero bars (I use a road bike with clip ons) you are sunk.

I read the race reports. A couple were helpful. Thanks for the suggestion. The website said that each age group goes off in 15 minute intervals. Do they stick with that? Do they combine men & woman?

My strength is the swim and invariably my bike is slow because of my fear on the run. Maybe going all out on the bike at least the first lap or two is the way to go. Maybe we can hook up after the race. What is your age group? I'm 55. I did a 2:36 at Nationals and I was coming off a cold. The course was hilly. I am aiming for sub 2:30 although ever course is different.

I'm 38.  The SF Tri will be my second.  My first will be the Marin Tri on Oct. 26.  I doubt I'm going to touch 2:30.     Based on running through the Marin Tri's course, I think I'll do 2:50 on that race if I'm having a good day.  Hills abound though, so I might have a better time at SF Tri.  Who knows, maybe I'll just be lucky to finish.  Embarassed

Good luck at Marin. I considered it, but the entry fee was high and didn't fit my calendar as well. Someone made a mention in another thread that you should be careful getting out in the swim. Lots of sharp rocks. First tri and your doing 2 weekends in a row. That will be quite an accomplishment.

You guys are getting me excited. I haven't done a tri yet (will in April)--but I am READY to be addicted and to never be able to end my season. Woohoo! Why would you have to end? To rest? I will say that the ambulance mentions MAY be scaring me . . . especially since I don't handle a bike very well.

Why would you have to end?

Winter (the cold, snowy season...).

I had my last race of the season on Sunday.  Still might pull the trigger and do another sprint next weekend.  Three hour drive, but I'm obsessed.

x2.  Starting an OWS training session by breaking your nose on the surface of the lake is always a bummer.    Besides, I get cold hands and feet below 50 degrees on the bike too.  I'd much rather do a "sauna session" on the trainer.

Thanks very much.  Yeah, the entry fee is high but I think it's going to be a great event.  It is a 100% for charity event and they're doing their best to be "green".

That was me with the cut feet and hand.  It happened at the clinic last weekend.  It's really messing with my training, but I'm working through it.

The second tri is actually 2 weeks from the first.  While I'm not going to break any records, I think I'm well prepared and should have little trouble finishing.  My goal is sub-3 on both, but we'll see how it goes.

LOL, I forgot about my brother's wedding on the 1st. I'm using it as an excuse to explain to my wife why I'm driving 11 hours to do a tri. This is my first year (although I tri'd a sprint and oly 2 years ago with not much of a traing plan) This will my 6th tri this season (and 2 open water swims). Talk about addicted.

That's awesome.  It's definitely inspiring that your times are so good in your first year.  I have a 10K on Mt. Tam next week as a training run.  I just decided to get into this thing in July.  I'm looking forward to an active season next year.  My A race is probably going to be "The Toughest Half" in Auburn, CA.  I may also do the Vineman.  Then again, I might say "screw this" after my first tri.  I sure felt that way during the clinic last weekend, but I felt 10x better after the pain went away.

In case you have not yet experienced it, be forewarned that the first mile running is hell. On my first sprint tri I swore to myself that I was a complete idiot to enter a race and I was never going to do another one. I survived and enjoyed the second half of the run. I usually run much better the second half and pass the people that blew by me in the first half.

That's yet another challenge I'm going to have to deal with.  I have issues with heat and hills on top of the transition from bike to run.  I'm running the course just about every chance I get.  The worst part is that the bulk of hills are in the first mile with a really nasty and steep hill right out of the transition area.

Good for you! I did the sprint version of the Treasure Island tri last year (my first sprint...until they had to cancel the swim due to an oil spill). I'd heard bad things about the bike course but I actually thought it was a lot of fun. Very flat, and yes, lots of turns, but it keeps things exciting. Just be careful and have a great time.
