Expert 608![]() ![]() St. Louis | Subject: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeI'm going to do my first half ironman "Kansa 70.3" and i was wondering what my time would be. My worst event by far is the swim. At a sprint, open water swim, i swam about 11 min for the 500 yds. 18 mile bike in 53 min--19.2 mph and then for the 5k 23:07. however, this year i have swam 1 mile idk the time, bike 70 miles at around 18 mph and ran 1/2 marathon at 1:42. Can anybody guess my time?

Expert 608![]() ![]() St. Louis | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timethanks, but after training from middle of december to may, i think ill be so much faster on the swim, transitions, bike and the run. the run time i put up was just my long run for highschool xc season. Just easy pace. I think i over trained this xc season. so taking it easy and gonna get well rested before I start training for the 70.3. By the way I think I have the ability to bounce back really fast after tough workout becasuse im only 16 right now. |

In my opinion though, its hard to "race" your first HIM, being that its hard to know how your body is going to respond. I think a better goal than any particular time is to finish, and be happy with your performance. Go for a goal time your second time out. |

Would you believe me if I told you you could finish in <5 hours? You might need to hire a coach, change your training habits and overall lifestyle, buy some new gear, etc. but it's within the realm of possibilities. |

Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeOK this is fun. Totally a random guess (obviously), but based on the times you provided and assuming you train well and follow an actual plan, I'll give you 18.2 mph on the bike for 56 miles, and a 1:50 half marathon time (because you seem like a strong runner). Your swim could use some work relative to the other two sports, but assuming you do the training, I gave you a pace of 2:05/100 yards. Add in five minutes for transitions, and we're at 5:43:00. If it's in the high 80's or really humid, add 15-20 minutes to that. There you go, that's my guess. And I think that bike speed is a bit of a sandbag. Let us know how you do. And here's a fun pace calculator that I used to get your times: |

Expert 608![]() ![]() St. Louis | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeno, my time does not really matter to me. Just wanna see so i can adjust my training accordingly to train for a base time, then work from this time. I am just gonna use a roadbike for the race with clip-on aero bars. I have 2006 specialized alle 9 speed 105 everywhere.--new pedals--look "keo carbons"-and new wheels -rol "race sl" and a tri seat. |

Member 381![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeok - I'll predict somewhere between 5:50 and 6:15, but only if you pace yourself on the bike. If you push too hard and fry yourself it will be ugly. |

Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeNo worries about the bike, it will serve you well. For example, my guy did 5:15 at his first HIM on an Allez with no aerobars. I am not sure if he had clipless pedals either. Anyway, my point is that it's more about your bike skills than your bike. Have fun! Edited by DMW 2008-10-10 2:10 PM |

Elite 5316![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeMy guess would be 6:15. But we don't know how hilly the run and bike course will be or what temp/ humidity you will deal with. The HIM I completed 2 weeks ago the bike course was 100 percent hills, dropped the bike time down some and took some spring out of my step. As a complarision my Oly bike pace was 19.75 and my HIM bike pace was 16.20 or some such. The heat also got up to 105 F, which affected the run as well as the absence of 3-4 aid stations that were supposed to be there. Make sure you learn about nutrition, bonking has a significant impact on your run...Your training will have big impact on how resilient you are to course demands. Luck with your HIM. |

Member 381![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeI gravely misunderstood. I thought you were looking for a prediction on a HIM in the near future. Now I realize that Kansas 70.3 is not until next June. So you have a significant training opportunity ahead. If you are actually sticking to a training plan that will challenge you, then I would bet closer to 5:30-5:45. Like one of the previous posters said you *may* be capable of 5:15 or even sub-5 given enough training volume and consistency. I'm also not sure I understand your 5k PR correctly. Is 23min your PR for 5k? If not , what is it? Of course, the idea that we could accurately predict is a bit outlandish - but I think it is fun to try to fashion a prediction for a "gentleperson's bet" of sorts. |

The course is posted: http://www.ironmankansas.com/course.php doesn't look too hilly. who knows about the weather. a tornado would sure put a twist on things. |

Expert 608![]() ![]() St. Louis | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timewell, hopefully there won't be a tornado. Other than that my 5k pr time is 18:28 but this year for XC season it is only 18:48 but we are now starting to taper for districts, sectionals. Yes, I am planning to construct a plan from middle of november to race date, using resources that i have available. Certified Coach down the street. May ask her to look over my plan. And im gonna use my garmin edge 305 for all biking needs. Also can anyone answer this: Many training plans that i have looked at for a HIM never run longer than 10 miles. Is it bad to go over the 13.1 distance for training? |

Champion 7558![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeIf you've got access to a coach, one of the first things they should do is ask you what your goals are. If you want to finish in <5 hours, they should help develop a training plan that lets you do so. If you can only train 6 hours per week, they'll put together a different plan that's less likely to get you to a <5 hour finish. As for training runs. The longer your training runs, the longer the recovery time. There's a psychological benefit to running longer than 13.1 (or biking more than 56, or swimming more than 2100 yards) that must be weighed agains the extra physical stress & recovery. |

Extreme Veteran 961![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Predicting 1/2 ironman timeNot sure if it will help you much, but my plan is to train at a rate that lets me finish Kansas 70.3 at 5:10. It might be a tad aggressive since my RedMan (first and only HIM) time was 5:16:18 and according to people who've done both, Kansas has a more challenging bike course. I'll also need to have some luck with the weather as conditions at RedMan this year were just about perfect. Anyway, feel free to take a look at my logs and RedMan race report for comparison purposes. Though as has already been stated, so much depends on the individual, weather, course, etc that predictions are tough to make. |
