Subject: Need help with long runs and big headache after.

I am doing 1-2 long runs a week (10+) at 5:30-7:30am. I eat and drink a little before so I have carbs to burn. On some of the days by 1:00pm I have a screaming headache.  I don’t have this issue when I do my days where I run under 7. I am not running a fast pace I am just working on endurance for next year.

Any advice on how to get rid of the headaches would be greatly appreciated.

Eat more afterwards.

The last couple of months before my IM, when the training ramped up, I was getting these horrible headaches in the back of head. The way to get rid of them? Eat.

Some will also say that your headaches might be a product of dehydration.

So eat and drink a lot of water. Do that for a couple of days to get your system back on track and I bet they go away. Then keep your calorie count up. That's how I fixed mine.

Dehydration ?

Remember that hydration is not just about drinking water... You might want to fuel up with electrolytes also, which will help the good hydration...

Hope this helps...

x 2 on eating.  If you run 10+ miles, you burned 1000+ calories.  In addition the breakfast of a mere mortal (300-500 cals), you need to put that 1000 cals back in the tank within a reasonable amount of time.  You hear over and over again "don't drink your calories," but all bets are off when you're just trying to eat enough food.  So have second (big) breakfast when you get back from running and maybe sip on some sports drink at work to sneak in a few extra calories before snack and lunch.

Headache after workouts/races is a big sign of dehydration. How much did you drink during your long run? After your long run? Compared to your sweat rate?

x lots on all the above.

I used to get headaches after a big days windsurfing, and was happening for a while when I picked up tris. My formula to solv it has been:

  • Be well hydrated and fuelled before workout
  • Stay well hydrated and fuelled during
  • As soon as I finish have flavoured milk while I'm stretching
  • After the stretch and shower have a meal - not just a snack but a meal (i.e. well rounded balance of food of a reasonable size)
  • Expect to eat again soon after (i.e. within 1-2 hours)

It seems for me that flavoured milk and first meeal just gets sucked up into replenishing what I've lost on the run, and then it's back to normal eating habits for the day after that.

Staying well hydrated has helped me a lot.

Good sunglasses and a hat as well.

I take some aspirin or Alleve when I'm done whether I feel a headache or not.

If I do those things, I don't get a headache.

Thanks for all the advice.

I drink water throughout the day but since my run is in the morning I only have about 1 bottle before I go. I don’t drink when I am running. I have been thinking maybe I should purchase a fuel belt or something. After my run I normally go to my office have a cup of coffee and a large bowl of oatmeal.  I drink water throughout the day.

What should I be eating after the run? I am new to the whole nutrition thing. I used to do Triathlons 13 years ago but not as much as I do them now.  I always think "well that was a great run and I burned a ton of calories so don’t eat stupid and waste the workout". I know probably not the best thing but I am open for the real answer.

Thanks for the milk idea.

Check your blood pressure before the run, after the run and during the HA. So far all of your foods that you are taking in have very little if any electrolytes. Electrolytes help keep your body going and keep your BP in check.

Water is great for exercise less than 40 min. After that you need some electrolytes during and after activity.

I also want to push home the fact it is probably dehydration. No need for a fuel belt, just grab a bottle of water. You probably dont need much, or stop by a place you know has a drinking fountain. I have stopped at the hospital before.

I used to get those headaches also, and since it was definitely not a hydration issue for me, it was a matter of not eating enough right afterwards. Running, more than any other exercise, puts my body in such a calorie deficit that I suffer without a good solid meal right after finishing. Sometimes I don't really feel that hungry, but I force myself to eat.

I would definitely suggest drinking something while you're running. If you're doing 10+ mile you also might want to do sports drink or gels rather than just water. That way you're getting the electrolytes you need during the run and not just after. I would also suggest increasing the amount of fluids you take in after your run. You may drink water throughout the day, but it will need to be more than you drink on a non-long run day until it's clear you've adequately replenished your fluids.

As for recovery food after you run, if I do my long run in the morning before work I don't have time to sit down to a second breakfast. I can however drink a Slim Fast or an Ensure or eat a yogurt - something quick - to get some immediate recovery calories in my system. That gives me time to shower, get to work, and pull out more food.

you are dehydrated! DRINK, DRINK, DRINK and replace your LYTES!

Nuun electrolyte tabs rock, low in sugar too! Mix tab with H2O, drink 1/2of mixture before your run and the other half after run. And I have never had a stomach upset with Nuun but have with other lyte replacement concoctions!

There's the problem.

After a decent bit of exercise you need to refuel. You're muscles will be begging for fuel and may divert it (sugars) away from the bran - hence the headache.

I used to do the same until someone pointed out that I was just wrecking my ability to recover and do the next workout. your teach your body to go into starvation mode and it actually shuts your metabolism down even more.

It is far better to refuel straight after than try and fast. Your body needs it to recover, and often people who are fasting fall into the trap of binging later and taking in even more calories.

So definitely refuel straight after the workout (protein and carb), then resume normal eating patterns after that.

Great recovery drink is chocolate milk..right % of protein to carbs. Most important meal of the day is what you eat after your workouts as that is what replenishing your body's glycogen levels.

I eat even before I get out of my workout clothes. The workout isn't done until you've eaten a little something.
The Fuel Belt idea is a good one. The rule of thumb I use is that any run over an hour (or less if really hot) I need to drink along the way. If you have waterfountains, great. Maybe stash a bottle along the way, or if you're doing an out-and-back, throw one along the way to get on the way back. But, the Fuel Belt is a lot easier, and you can drink whenever you want.

Thanks to everyone for all the great advice.

Looks like I need to change a few things. After a workout I would drink Power Ade Zero I thought that because is had no calories it was the way to go. Maybe I will go back to Gatorade to get the calories and electrolytes.

I will look at adding something like a proten drink right afterword.

Hopefully I will learn a little more about what and when to eat as I do this longer.
