Subject: Six Gaps Accident

There was rumor that someone was 'life flighted' off the mountain.  The descents down the Gaps are tricky - with the correlation of the smarter you are, the trickier each becomes (a sane dose of fear is healthy).

The descent down Hogpen had even me, not the brightest of rides, hugging the brakes until my shoulders got sore.  That said, I know the Gaps because I live here.  I suspect that the descent caught her unaware as tehre not exactly a lot of hills in Miami.

Prayers are with the rider, Daniella, for a speedy recovery.

++++ text of letter sent to participants ++++

Dear Six & Three Gappers,

I received this email update from a friend of an injured Six Gap rider, Daniella Izquierdo, who wanted me to pass this on to everyone. For more information, please contact Betty Trueba at [email protected].

Thanks,
Stefani Logsdon

---------------------------------------

Dear Cycling Family,

As many of you know, a group of Miami riders went to the Six Gap of Georgia this past weekend to enjoy what started out as a truly wonderful time.  On the mountain known as Hogpen, which is the most difficult climb of all, the first two miles of the descent are terribly steep before leveling off a bit and then resuming the descent.  It was towards the end of those two miles, that Daniela had her accident.  She was soon cared for by two trauma surgeons that happened to be on the ride and then flown to the Erlanger Trauma Center in Chatanooga, Tennessee.  We are all blessed to know Daniela and her ever vibrant personality. She is a treasure in our lives and we ask the Lord to grant her a speedy and full recovery from this traumatic accident.

Many in our community as well as in Georgia have been asking what they can do to help.  First and foremost, we ask for your continued prayers and support.  Daniela will need all of us in the next few months to help her through these difficult times.  A prayer service is scheduled at 7:15am at the usual Larios departure area followed by a ride at 7:30 to Bayfront Park. [The ride will be held Saturday October 4, leaving from Casa Larios in SOUTH MIAMI (Address: 5859 SW 73rd St, South Miami, FL 33143) (Phone: (305) 662-5656) at 7:30am. We will have a prayer service first at 7:15am and then ride to Bayfront staying all together.] In addition, a trust fund is being set up for her at City National Bank to help with her expenses. Any donations should be sent to:  The Maria Daniella Izquierdo Fund c/o Betty Trueba, 12905 SW 107 Court, Miami, FL  33176.

The cycling community is a family brought together by the love of a sport but more than anything, by the wonderful bond we all share.  When one of us hurts, we hurt together.  When one of us celebrates, we celebrate together.  Daniela... hurry home - the party is waiting!!!!!!

One of the guys I rode up there with, Harry, is a doctor and was the first person to come to her aid.  I ended up going out to pick him up after he'd seen her off with the EMTs and resumed riding.

We're all wishing the best for her; I know Harry's checked up on her a couple of times and if I get any updates on her condition, I'll post them.

I really hate to hear that she did not make it.  I have been thinking about her a lot since I learned some of the details of the accident on here.  I have been wanting to ask how she was doing, but I have hesitated because I did not want to feel like a gawker.  This is really sad news.

*SIGH* very sad news to hear indeed.

Note that she was an organ donor ... her last act was to give.

I going to talk to Steph to remind her again that is what I would want to do if placed in the same situation.

Latrina...from what I've gathered, nobody saw the accident take place.  A friend was one of the first cyclists who happened upon the scene and she said it was very bad...her words (some graphic details included):

Nobody saw the accident, but my husband and I were the second people with her after two other cyclist one of which was a neurologist thank God literally, sag was right behind.. none of us could get a cell, but we got a radio. I ran over and just prayed over her, about 30 seconds later an ER doctor came down the hill stopped, he took a look at her and once the radio was there he told them to get a hellicopter and that she was a level one head trauma. WE stayed until she left in the ambulance to get to the top for the hellicopter. From the way her bike looked, we think she might of lost control, tacoed her wheel which caused it to fall off, her fork was broken and she was about 8 feet from her bike on her face when we got there. WHen the neurologist turned her, I thought she was dead, her body was limp, but then she gasped forair and blood came out of her mouth. She then had horrible breathing, her helmet was cracked, glassed broken up into her forehead, it was awful.

I cannot even imagine...

Certainly helps put things in perspective.  I won't be complaining about a bad ride or run anytime soon.

This is terrible news.  Prayers to her family and friends.

And, as a PSA, the Hogpen decents are pretty hairy. (As stated)  I always ride/pump the brakes.  If you've never seen them before riding down them, and even after riding them, exercise extreme caution.
