Master 1547![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Best Race Wheelset for <$2000I need to spend $2000 on a new wheelset (including cassette/tires). If I don't insurance is only giving me $1100 to replace my stolen set. So I will do as told and spend the $2000 (with reciept I get the full $2000). So, whats the best wheelset combination that is versatile enough to race in any condition at this price point? I don't plan on buying wheels after this for a long time...so these will need to work for all races. I was planning on replacing my 60mm rims with a set of 2009 Flashpoint 60's (TriSports). But I was noticing you can get a 80mm rear wheel for around the same price. SO maybe a mixmatch? I know nothing of the HED/SRAM lines. Opinions from owners would be appreciated. I weigh in at 182ish. I just bought the Mavic Carbone SLR's for $1950. I love them, but they are more of a road wheel than a tribike wheel. |

Expert 1394![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Best Race Wheelset for <$2000Why not look at some Hed Wheels. You can go with a H3 deep ($1250)on the front and a Jet disc ($1050) on the back for about 2k or if you want go with the H3deep on Front and a Stinger 90 ($850) on back and get a wheel cover for when you want to use it as a disc. You could also just get the regular H3 for the front ($850) which is a little cheaper and is 55mm deep as opposed to the H3deep which is 90mm deep. |

Regular 54![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Best Race Wheelset for <$2000If you want to go HED: The most "versatile" set is the Hed Jet 60/90 (if tubular, Hed Stinger 60/90). Depending on the mph you ride at now, you will probably see the "fastest" set as a Hed Trispoke up front and a disc. Trispoke can be difficult in winds, if you're slowing down because you're uncomfortable, it's not the fastest set. Other options: Hed Jet/Stinger 60/60 or Hed Jet/Stinger 90/90, which can be faster than the trispoke and disc at certain yaw angles. You should call HED as they are very informative about what set is right for you. Still, the 60/90 is the most versatile set and if you get a wheelcover from wheelbuilder.com then your rear wheel turns into a disc for 100 bucks. |

Not sure why you say "Depending on the mph you ride at now." And I've found no difficulty with the trispoke front in any winds I've encountered. |

The theory goes: The faster you ride the less amount of time you'll be riding with a yaw angle beyond the stall angle of a deep rim. Therefore slower riders over the course of a ride may see more total drag from a deeper rim due to a deeper rims shaller stall angle. (note: this doesn't apply to discs) |

Master 1853![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() syracuse | Subject: RE: Best Race Wheelset for <$2000if all you need is a receipt for $2,000, i'd buy a power tap with the wheels. get a HED 3 up front, and a power tap wheel in back with disc cover. the H3 front should cost you around 850 brand new. You should be able to find a rear power tap with disc cover for around 1200 easy. personally, IMO, this "best wheel set for $XXXX.XX" is a bunch of balloney and you'll be faster with a power tap if used properly to pace you on the bike on longer races so you can run better off the bike... |

Extreme Veteran 510![]() Falls Church, VA | Subject: RE: Best Race Wheelset for <$2000BTW I ride a set of H3C's and have no desire to change. Though I would add a disc to my quiver if someone dropped one on my lap. But if I had to spend two grand on new race wheels I'd definitely take out a set of HED Jet 69's FR ( FR = flame rouge and adds ceramic bearings and scandium (lighter) rim instead of AL). Not that I fully think FR is worth it but if you had to spend $2000 fr brings up the MSRP to 2100. Without the FR you'd be leaving about $500 on the table. I'm definitely intrigued by the C2 rim width and would like to spend some time riding them to see if what some reviews say is true.

Hrm. What part of "I NEED to spend $2000 on a wheelset" do all of you recommending budget stuff not get? Get a deep dish with a powertap for the rear, whichever wheel you prefer that brings you to 2k for the front, and add a disc cover. John |

Well it's not MY theory but I got the basics from here: http://www.hedcycling.com/wheels/ The back up comes from my understanding of hydro/aerodynamics from being a naval architect.
