Expert 1143![]() ![]() ![]() Wellington, Florida | Subject: No Run Course Change FLA 70.3Just got an e-mail back from a rep at NAS, no change coming for the run course at 70.3 FLA. Guess I'll need to save my Mizunos from this year. That way you cant tell the new dirt from the old dirt. Might wear black socks also. Aawwwwww!! e-mails below. FM From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2008 8:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Fla 70.3 run question Hello...Are there any plans on changing the run course this year? I find it hard, with all the roads within Disney property that we have to run 3/4 of the course on dirt/grass service paths. This is NOT an Xterra race, its an Ironman. thanks for your consideration, FM Reply: Hi, No not that I no of. Melody |

No change in the run course means no race at FLA 70.3 for me. Im going to Gulf Coast and HECK, I live here!!! Of all the hundreds of acres of beautiful land Disney owns and they make us run there. What a shame! |

Veteran 123![]() Jacksonville, FL | Subject: RE: No Run Course Change FLA 70.3Yeah, I've done that race twice and I won't do it again because of the run. The swim isn't all that great (I love the smell of diesel fumes in the morning!), last year's bike route went through a construction zone, but the run kills it for me everytime. It's not just the heat, but running on that grass just wears me out. You would think it would be easier on the joints than running on pavement, but for some reason it feels like I'm running on sand. |

To me, that's a double negative, so really she means, "yes." But, yeesh, y'all are weenies. You don't want your shoes to get dirty? You gotta' be kidding me. First, I've never finished a tri "clean," and given how much I sweat, my shoes are always rank. What's a little dirt? I threw mine in the wash, and they certainly aren't bright white, but I can still run in them...because after all, I'm not out to impress with my shiny white shoes... I would love to do that race again. It was hot, hilly on the bike, and hard as hell. Just like a triathlon should be. HTFU. Really. |

Master 2005![]() South Florida | Subject: RE: No Run Course Change FLA 70.32 years ago I said I would never do that race again, but found myself doing it again. The run course sucks, yes, not because my shoes got dirty but for several other reasons. First, it lacks shade. Period. Second, it's 3 loops. Same thing, over and over and over. If I'm not mistaken, there is a vast amount of property there. The off road section is full of uneven ruts. As primarily a road runner, this can mess with you during a half ironman. Also, the fact that I had to pick up a dirty sponge off the ground and dip it in the cool water on my last 2 rounds was a bit irritating, and I finished in less than 6 hours. I can't imagine what it was like later in the day. For $250 dollars, I want a cold, clean sponge. Logistically I didn't care for the race. Getting on and off Disney property is not fun, and if you make a wrong turn it can be quite frustrating. The swim is nice and the bike is lovely - except for that one little construction area where we had to ride on the sidewalk So, for this year, I definitely will not be back to Disney. I kow you all are heart broken |

I don't mind dirty shoes - you should see the bike shoes I'm still wearing. Nasty is one word, but comfy is the other, so I'm o-k with nasty! I don't like the uneven ground that is sandy and hard to get my footing & the lack of shade. Oh well, every course has it's issues, I'm happy to take them on! It's the hilly part of your post that made me giggle - seriously - that was pancake flat with a few little speedhumps along the way!! Edited by katimomma 2008-09-18 9:03 AM |

Master 2139![]() ![]() ![]() piece o heaven | Subject: RE: No Run Course Change FLA 70.3^^^^^^^^^everything that is said above should be sent to NAS Maybe they would change the course, especially the run. I did the race in 08 and had fun, I always do, but the run was tuff - mentally and physically. I did not care for that run course at all. I was movin for 9 miles and hit a wall. Also, I thought I had .1 mile to go at the 13 mile marker - wrong, another .25 to go. the bike also topped out at 57 miles and the construction was not fun at all. All and all said, I would still return, cause I M a glutton for punishment and it is nice to be close to Disney for the lil ones. Knowing the course now, I would plan it better. |

Hmmm...come to central Mississippi. We're pretty flat. Much flatter than the course at Disney. (Which I like much better than the total flat courses, by the way, even if I do go really slow.) |

It's the hilly part of your post that made me giggle - seriously - that was pancake flat with a few little speedhumps along the way!! I did a double-take on that, too, and was going to ask the question. I'd always heard the Florida races were very flat, which has factored into my short list decision-making process. I guess we all have our own definitions of flat and hilly...? |

I am planning on doing the Gulf Coast Tri on May 9th. If I'm not mistaken, the course is very similar/same (except the other 56 bike miles) as IMFL, which I will be doing in November for the 2nd time...so it'll be a good practice race. Plus, it's a little more laid back up there than at Disney...Anyone care to join???? PS...entry is only $150. The hundred bucks I save will cover the cheapie hotel I get right on the run course. Rock N Roll Man is a bit more challenging that Gulf Coast, but the swim a lot more friendly than the Gulf Swim. Anyway, both are great alternatives. |

THink he said it was hilly...however, I can't imagine what can be friendlier than swimming in the GULF!!! Unless there's a hurricane or something |
