Subject: Updating shifters question
Newbie question - how much would it cost to upgrade a bike from down-tube shifters to STI shifters?  Is it just the cost of buying the new shifter and "throwing it on" or is it more involved and costly?

It depends.

If your current setup is any less than 9 or 10 cogs in the rear, there is much more involved.

If your current setup is 7 or 8 cogs in the rear, you can find some used shifters on ebay or forum classifieds that would work with your current setup.

i.e. if you have 8 cogs in the rear, you need 8-speed STI shifters. Ditto for 9, 10, etc.

If you're looking to upgrade to 9 or 10 speed, you will need shifters, derailleur, and possibly new rear wheel (if your current hub is 126mm and not 130mm).
