Pre-race routine:

My husband and I went to have a "vacation" weekend associated with this race. The weather was really, really hot and humid and we had picked a bed an breakfast with no air conditioning. There was no breeze and sleeping and relaxing was non-existent. We did ride the course on our motorcycles on Saturday and it looked like a good course. Based on what I saw I set a goal of 1 hour and 45 minutes...For breakfast that AM I had a bowl of oatmeal and gatorade...yummy!
Event warmup:

Not much to do before the race as getting in for a quick swim was tough. There were warnings about the zebra mussels that could cut your feet like a razor blade. Many people had duct tape on their feet to protect them...I didn't want to risk losing a toe so I stayed out of the water.
Swim
  • 10m 47s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first time with alot of waves. We swam right into them and then they were behind us. The worry over the mussels caused undue anxiety across the competitors. I was not impressed with the quality of the lake.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

There was a bit of a distance from the swim exit to the transition. Lots of bikes and a very crowded area. Overall, things went well...I was hoping for 2 minutes...
Bike
  • 1h 00m 14s
  • 15.4 miles
  • 15.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I still wish I could improve on my bike...When I saw the course I was hopeful for a fast ride...didn't count the wind in as a factor. The first 7.7 miles were into the wind. It felt as if I was pedaling and gettting nowhere. I get so dissappointed when I think I have had an exceptional bike ride and I am not improving. I had hoped to do this in 50-55 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Keep riding...build muscle and endurance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Couldn't get one running shoe on...my feet were really sweaty/wet...
Run
  • 31m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I need to find the mental stamina to just keep going...I always stop about 2 miles...must keep going!
What would you do differently?:

Run
Post race
Warm down:

Hubby and I walked around a bit and watched other racers come in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mental strength.

Subject: RE: mini-musselman

Yeah, the headwind on that first long climb was rough. The lake didn't bother me, but I grew up swimming in Nantasket Bay.

I was hoping to run into you. I was one of the few people in a Team Javelin uniform, but I wore my BT t-shirt after the race.
