Extreme Veteran 315![]() ![]() ![]() South Jordan UT | Subject: RE: GlucosamineI am one of those who is wary of supplements as well, but glucosamine is one that I do take. There have been a ton of studies on glucosamine. None of them say that it hurts. Many of them say that it actually helps re build cartilage. Most of the research has suggested that it needs to be a glucosamine/chondroitin HCL and that glucosamine by itself does very little. Give it a try. You might really like it. |

Expert 1083![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: GlucosamineYears ago when I first hurt my hip this was recommended to me from a trainer at the gym. All of my doctors are always happy to hear that I'm on it. however, the one thing the trainer said is if you can stomach the taste (it's not pleasant) you're better off taking the liquid form - your body absorbs more of it then if you take the pill. Not sure if it's true, just what I was told. I've only taken the liquid. |

Before I started taking the gluco/chon, I was only able to run a max of about 2x per week, because my knees would ache so much. After starting the gluco/chon, I can run as much as I want, with no knee pain. You do have to take it religously for at least 1-2 months before you'll start to reap the benefits, though....so be patient, as it takes awhile to work its way into your system. |

That's the thing I hate about supplements. You have to take them for so long before they work. I want it to work NOW dammit! |

The topic has been discussed a few times. Everyone that takes it will say that it helps, and a few people will post saying that it doesnt work (yet have never taken it). I've taken it. I can't tell the difference. And neither can studies of otherwise healthy people who have tried it versus placebo. People who 'say it helps', can't ever really 'know'. So I'll go with the studies and save my money, thanks. |

Master 1718![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Loughborough, England | Subject: RE: GlucosamineI take Glucosamine sulphate (1000mg) and since I have been taking it my knee problems, whilst not completely cured, have now been reduced to a manageable level. Of course it could be the result of other treatments (massaging, stretching & strengthening) but I'll continue to take them. |

New user 16 | Subject: RE: GlucosamineBest way to know if a supplement works or not (and guaranteed to not be a placebo effect)?? Give it to a dog. Here me out... I have an old dog, who has had trouble getting up / laying down for a few years (gets stiff, poor guy). Anyway, I have taken glucosamine / chondroitin for running for years myself, and believed it helped me. My wife is a vet, so I asked her if it would help our dog Jake. Her answer, of course it will, they've been giving it to older animals at her work for a long time. So I gave our dog Jake a pill with his dinner. Same thing the next day, and the day after. Third day, he is getting up and down with no problem. Dogs don't fake pain. No such thing as placebo effect either. Before glucosamine / chondroitin, it was painful for my dog to lay down or get up. After glucosamine / chondroitin, he has no problem. Nothing else about his diet or life changed. |

Veteran 223![]() ![]() Mississippi | Subject: RE: GlucosamineI have been taking the triple strength with Chohdr..(can't spell it, sorry) for years and it works for me. I really don't have knee/joint issues. Do your research before you buy and get one that has little to no 'trash' in it. There are lots of brands on the market and some have junk stuff and some are good. I watch for coupons and when they do a 'get extra %" with pills. I can get a bottle of 120 for around $22 with coupon and that will last 60 days since its triple strength and I only have to take 2 pills |

Remember that relating the cause to the effect is not always straightforward... Imagine that now he goes to take Glucosamine and after 1 week the "problem" disappears. Why should he say that it is for Glucosamine? Why did you think that? |

Veteran 223![]() ![]() Mississippi | Subject: RE: GlucosamineI use Osteo Bi-Flex MSM with Joint Shield- triple strenght. Take 2 a day. It has both Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Been using this for years. I buy mine at Wal Mart. This is a cummulative suppliment. In other words, you need to take it daily and it will be about 20 to 30 days before you notice a difference. It has worked for me. I have read lots of articles about glucosamine. Some say it does nothing and some say it helps. Whatever the reason, it helps my joints and I'll be taking it every day till I go on to glory! |

Especially after 20-30 days...Are you sure you are doing something positive for your body? And what if you are damaging something? |

Veteran 223![]() ![]() Mississippi | Subject: RE: GlucosamineI know it works for me because before I started using it, my knees and joints were sore, stiff, after my runs. After taking it for about 3 weeks or so, I realized after my runs, I did not have the same pain, soreness in my knees. From that point on, it just became something I take every day and I can tell you, as a 51 year old female, my knees are in pretty danged good shape for all the running and training I do. At one point a few months back, I ran out, did not replace it for about a month and my knees began hurting again, I got back on it and again, they felt 100% better. I don't care what the trials may show, I know for me it has worked. I researched the internet thoroughly for all the ingredients in it before I ever took the first one. I don't take any med's, don't even like to take asprin, advil, aleve much and I sure was not going to put anything into my body that I did not know what it was and what it could do- if there was any thing negative about it. I found nothing and I trust what I take. B |

I found nothing and I trust what I take. B Your approach is not scientific and I hope all the best for you. There are many examples in life where effect of taking something is delayed after years. You are taking this element without knowing exactly (scientifically) how much, when and if it has effect. Again, your experiment is not satisfactory to say it is good on you. Some examples: 1) Iron: many runners taking iron (within general supplements) end up into Haemochromatosis in 5-6 years time (you see...iron is good, iron makes me feeling better because I train and I am always tired, etc. etc.) 2) simple carb: you eat 25grams of carbs per day more than you need and you gain about 5-6kg in 1 year 3) Asbestos: it takes 10 years to switch on a lungs cancer 4) Zinc: you supplement with zinc in normal quantities and, if you don't need it, after 3 years you lower the HDL cholesterol and you will be low in copper (needing another supplement) Anyway, many people like to believe and this is the aspect which makes those providers rich. I am totally against any supplements or medicaments. I use tea against fever or cold... |

Member 49![]() | Subject: RE: GlucosamineI have taken Cosamin DS in the past. It never did anything for me so I stopped. However, I had a severe accident to my knee when I was a child and wound up getting staph infection in the joint. Since then I tore the meniscus bilaterally. During surgery to remove the torn meniscus they discovered that I have severe degenerative chrondosis meaning all the covering on the bone is crumbling. I am up for a TKR this year and I'm only 27! I have heard the same thing from my Orthopedic Surgeons.....it MAY help, but it can't hurt. It never did anything for me and I couldn't stomach taking it anymore so I stopped. |
