I just found out this afternoon that my friend John, who has been battling cancer for over a year, was told to put his affairs in order and contact hospice.

I need a shoulder to cry on.

Good call on the wine. I'll do just that this evening. We can toast to my friend and yours.

So sorry ladies, both of you.    There aren't many things that I out-and-out hate, but cancer is one of them.

I'm sorry. Vinotherapy supplemented with fine Belgian chocolate might be just the thing

I had an entire class on "why bad things happen to good people". While the instruction was lackluster, some of the books were actually pretty thought provoking. Read Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning". It was written by a holocaust survivor and it talks about the responses to tragedy, as well as the "will to meaning". Not necessarily the will to live, but the will to give living meaning, which can be found in even the most bleak of situations...may be worth a read.

It was.

Phoenixazul - I don't look for meaning in his struggle. That's just the nature of life. I accept that. I've got to get better at just crying instead of holding my breath and going numb.

Lara, hope your spirits are a bit better this morning, too.

Yep.

Found out my 'big brother' from my fraternity has cancer yesterday...

***Hi everyone -

Well...it turns out that I have colon cancer that has already spread to
the liver. I found out last week during my colonoscopy that I had a large
"mass" in there, but just found out yesterday how bad it is and that it
was cancer. (Stage 4 colon cancer...not good - look it up.)

Don't worry so much about me -- I'm personally fine with this, being a
philosopher; it's Brenna, Aidan, my family, etc. I'm worried about.
Good thing I have a $1M life insurance policy...best bet I've ever made.

I have a lot of things to do right now, incl. my move, so please don't
be offended if I don't reply to everyone's emails. (And please don't call
me right now -- sorry.) Will give everyone an update when I can.****

Devestating to say the least. Young kid too.

Wow, Mark. That's what my friend John has. Colon cancer. Spread to his liver, not sure where else. His liver couldn't tolerate the chemo, either. He's been in treatment for over a year. He's my age (mid 40s).

Hope your friend fares better.

Survival rate is less than 5% for 5 years. I had no idea it was that drastic.

I wrote him a long e-mail and he responded positively.

Argh.

John's doctor told him that most people have 2yrs. He's into his 2nd year. Chemo isn't working, experimental protocol was too hard on his liver. He's still on chemo because he doesn't want to give up. Mostly getting treated for his liver complications.

Another guy we know who survived leukemia is writing a book called Tumor Humor. I believe he wrote a chapter about a guy who was told to put his affairs in order, too, but he survived. He sent it to John to read.

Aren't I lucky - my sister is in town with my nephews. I'm off to Busch Gardens with them. Nice antidote to chase away the blues - laughing kids.
