Despite the weather it was/is a great race and I will do it very year as well (except when I finally do an IM).

I wanted to finish sub 6 hours, but... about 6:05 is what I'll have to settle with. Oh well... I still finished about 5 minutes faster than last year. Maybe I'll hit sub 6 next year. I would like to blame it on the weather, but I don't know. Everything was going great and I definitely thought at about mile 7 of the run that I would do it, but then things started falling apart and I had nothing left as I came down the home stretch. But hey... it's a half-ironman, it's not supposed to be easy, right?

Great job everyone!

it's too bad I didn't get to meet up with you guys, this weekend was "interesting" to say the least! I was pleasantly surprised by the race today. After watching what seemed like mayhem at the sprint and looking at the course maps I didn't know what to expect.

I finished up in 5:14 today, no complaints from me. The thought that my nutrition plan needs work was solidified again today.

I hope everyone enjoyed Montauk =)

I'm beside myself with disappointment.  I screwed up my nutrition - bad - and sabotaged myself and an easy sub 5:30.  I had one loop left in the run at 4h 34m ...and my HUGE Miscalculation in Nutrition caught up with me and I almost ended up calling for medical care.  So considering I was milligrams of sodium away from a medical DNF, I'll take a 5:52.

From cramping so bad at my last HIM in July, I had determined the cause was lack of Sodium.  I did all the research and your average Pro Triathlete (which I am obviously not) takes in 800mg and hour.  So I took and S!Cap (348 mg) before the race, 4 more S!Caps on the Bike, along with 4 Powerbar C2Max (200mg each), plus two bottles of Perpetuem (231mg per bottle) and 2 servings of Gatorade (110 per serving) So my total Sodium intake for about 3 hours 40 mins was 3,187mg - or roughly 900mg per hour.   Not Good.  If I had been racing back in July again when it was 85 degrees, I probably would've been fine with the 100+ mg per hour miscalculation ...but seeing as it was 55 degrees, cold and rainy and my sweat rate was probably 1/4 of what it normally is, I sent my body into shock.

I knew I was in trouble when I got off the bike and my saliva tasted like sea water.  I knew right away I needed to just drink water at the aid stations in an attempt to flush my system.  I was nauseas running the first loop but my legs and breathing felt great and I flew up Murder Hill and through the first loop in about 48 minutes.  Starting the second loop the naseau started hitting me so bad I started getting scared.  I had no option but to walk.  The best way to describe the naseau, it's exacly like when you drink too much alcohol - you're on the verge of puking, the room is spinning - that's exactly where my head was at.  Needless to say I ended up walking maybe 4.5 of the 6 miles.

Live and learn.  It's going to be a long year of waiting for me.

thats interesting, i had a nutrition problem as well. i think it was too much sugar. Just gatorade and 5 gels sent my stomach into a tailspin. i also had about 4 saltcaps as well, which may have added to the problem, felt like i was running with broken glass in my stomach.

Considering the temperature, the coolness, and cloud cover - we probably needed half the fuel and liquid one would one would normally use had it been 85 degrees and sunny.  Funny, I saw some guy in front of me when we were finishing the bike and both his bottles (one with blue, one with yellow liquid) were full on the back of his bike.  He knew.  Now so do we.  I effing hate learning shiiit the hard way.

Results are up.  here are mine

 http://results.active.com/pages/oneResult.jsp?pID=43251107&rsID=70740

all the peeing killed my time, and i didnt push the bike at all, but that was my plan to do a strong run.

all in all im really happy. swim was awesome, and that was my biggest concern, never swam that distance in OW and the bike i can easily improve. Run was hindered with the stomach cramp, so that will get faster.

My race report is up. At least I moved up about 50 spots from last year.

My pace was far from impressive, but I'm happy to have had an opportunity to compete and finish. I did my first tri 4 months ago, and ran my first 1/2 mary last week - so it's been quite the humbling (and rewarding) learning experience. I never followed any regimented training plan, or set any concrete goals for myself; rather (like a kid in a candy store), I entered as many races as I possibly could this summer and tried to learn on the fly to the best of my ability. So while my finishing time won't be getting me on Kona, I gave it absolutely everything I had - so I have to be happy with my effort.

All that said, I'm sure to take a more streamlined approach to the events I select next year. But until then, I'll see you guys at Cedar Beach this weekend.  Wink

Well, the RR is up. For my second tri season, only my third tri ever, and first HIM I was very happy with my race even though by the majority of posts on this link I was slower than a snail. My major issue (other than the rain) on the bike was peeing. Hadn't practiced this and I missed the restrooms first loop so I eventually got off the bike and found a bush. I was proud that I ran the entire 1/2 marathon including murder hill both times and pushing for my goal of sub 7 which was just confirmed on the website at 6:57:21. Hope everyone is enjoying some well earned time off!

Time off?  I took today off, tomorrow it's back to training.  This Sunday is the Cedar Beach Sprint!!  Then I'm doing an abbreviated 6-week marathon training plan for Philly.  There will be no time off!!

Congrats on finishing your first Half Ironman!!  Great job.
