Running is definately my limiter in triathlon so I'll be doing a spring marathon just so that I can focus on running this winter. I'm trying to choose a plan that will help me develop some speed.

I am trying that later this year, but need to wait to get my year end distribution to afford the bionic legs, additional heart/lung operation, and time machine. They are even more expensive than a new bike. |

I felt that you needed to already be in decent shape to attempt it. It is not a couch to marathon plan. I personally would keep looking around at different plans. There are also some plans out there that will help with speed. The biggest thing is to keep running; long run, speed work, and tempo runs. Put in your miles and your time will come down. |

Yea, so not actually proved out, but I liked the plan. Straightforward, and really, not all that different from other plans that are out there. |

Subject: RE: 4 months to a 4 hour marathon??This plan is very specific on pace and calls for things like a 7 mile run at an 8:45-8:50 pace (in week 12). Week 2 is a 9 mile run at a 10:40-11:10 pace. I think this is a good plan if you are already in the region of these paces, but if you're not, then you could end up in a world of hurt. It might be better to select a plan that takes into account your specific fitness level, rather than trying to force you to run faster (or slower) than you should be. |

My corollary to this is that most people should train for a 10K the way they currently train for a marathon. |

I have no idea about the specifics of the plan, but it would seem that the training paces would be stenuous (or conversely, lax) if the four-hour marathon goal wasn't right for you. In which case you should choose a more appropriate plan. I've heard people say similar things about for example, the FIRST plan, that the training paces were too strenuous. But when it came down to it, neither their marathon goal nor the methodology by which they chose those paces were approprate. |

Expert 2555![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: 4 months to a 4 hour marathon??I think both of the plans you're considering are based on having a solid running base before starting. Unless you run more than your log indicates, you may not have enough base. A solid base would be more like running 20-25 miles/week minimum for a period of at least 6 months to a year. However, if your goal is to just run faster doing a marathon may not be the best approach. You would really benefit more just by running more. Get your weekly mileage into the 40+ range for several months through a combination of longer slowish runs and shorter fastish runs. Keep it at about 70-80% slower runs. If you can maintain this regimen for 4-6 months, by next season you'll be much stronger and faster as a runner. |
