I'm looking into buying a tri-suit (or something along those lines) for next summer. I just had my first summer racing and competed in a sportsbra/speedo/bike shorts/running shorts. This worked out okay, but I definitely could cut down my transition times without pulling the shorts on and off, etc.

I'm just wondering what the women out there have been wearing and what your experiences have been like-- pros and cons to any certain tri-wear? Also, what have you found to offer the best support?

This is what I'm looking into right now.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm not a fan of tri suits.  I don't like having to unzip and pull it almost all the way off just to use the bathroom.  I really like the tri shorts made by Pearl Izumi.  I wear a TYR tri shirt that has pockets for gels.  2 piece is the way to go...JMHO

I've got a 2-piece set.  I tried multiple 1-piece suits, but none fit me well - I happen to have boobs - go figure!

I either popped the zipper or couldn't breathe.

So, my 2-piece works nicely - a larger size top than bottom.

Many women just aren't built like the designers think we are supposed to be.

And, I'm built kinda nice!

Good luck!

Every woman has her favorite brands - or dislikes.  I have TYR shorts, but did NOT like their tops.  I have a Zoot top with built-in bra as my girls are welfare mamas, not trustfund babies...a built-in bra is supportive enough for me.

Try to find a shop with lots of brands to try out.  Sportsbasement was my best local choice for lots of trying on.

I am well endowed, so I wear a tri top with a built-in bra (Orca) and another bra underneath it.  For shorts, I've had the most luck with Sugoi.  But I agree, different brands work for different people and it really is a personal preference thing.

I tried on LG stuff in shark fabric and found it was a bit see through.

I'd go with two piece as easier to use restroom and get proper fit.

I also have 2 pieces.  My top is actually a men's top b/c I think the women's tops tend to be too short for me.

I bought a tri top and some tri shorts for the same reason I buy two-piece swimsuits:  I can just drop the drawers when I need to go to the bathroom!

I did my first tri wearing my swimsuit underneath regular workout clothes.  Going into my second one, I knew there was no way I was going to fool with that again.

I bought a Zoot racerback shirt and a pair of Zoot 6" black shorts.  I'm so glad I did as it made transitions a breeze.  Good luck shopping!

I am another fan of the two piece route. I have DeSoto shorts...I love them and they've lasted me through two seasons already! My tri top is TYR with a built in bra, but I agree that it's a little short. I just got over it when it seemed like every tri top I tried was a little short in my opinion. I also agree with what everyone has said that it's really a personal opinion and what you are comfortable wearing. When I first started, I went to tons of shops and tried on dozens of shorts and tops until I found ones that I was comfortable in. Then I went online and found the good deals! For me, if I'm not comfortable in what I'm wearing, then I won't race well. Good luck!

Hi There--I agree that two pieces are much more practical.  Word of warning:  I trained for my one-and-only sprint tri wearing my husband's tri shorts, a Tyr training swim top, and a Nike running shirt with built-in compression.  Having trouble wriggling into the running top while wet, I broke down a few weeks before the race and invested in a two-piece 2XU getup.  Having waited so long in the season, the pickings at the tri shops were pretty slim.  The top is cropped and I wasn't thrilled with the idea of racing with a bare midriff, but it fit well and seemed race-ready.  It was an all-women race anyway, so I figured who would care.  WELL, all I can say is you might want to take a look at yourself in the aero position BEFORE you purchase.  Holy drooping gut in the bike race pics!  I am considering having the photographer shot.

I wore a one-piece tri suit for my first race  (http://www.jamtrisuits.com/) and it was great with the exception of trying to go to the bathroom after the race was over.  It was a bit hard getting it back up.  I loved the fit and support.  I have since ordered as second one.  They definitely run true to size and offered enough support on top that I did not need a sports bra also.

I did buy Danskin tri top and shorts for my second race and liked the pockets on the legs of the shorts but there have been some complaints about them causing drag.   I wore a wetsuit so it was not an issue. I liked being able to tuck my asthma inhaler and sports beans into the pockets.  I did not like how the top rolled up during the bike and run though.   If I use this top again for a race, I will invest in a sports bra.

Be patient.  It may take awhile to find what you like.   I went through 4 or 5 tops before i really was happy.  One was too loose, one rode up when i ran, one was too high on the neck, that sort of stuff.   You also have my vote on the 2 piece for the bathroom factor.  I really like my one piece, but it's a pain.

LOL!  I looked pretty decent standing up in my tri clothes, but being bent over on the bike seriously showed some muffin-top.  I couldn't believe my husband even took that shot!  I cropped it immediately!

I am not a fan of one piecers...first of all I don't want to have to get naked in a porta potty to pee.  Second of all I'm a lot smaller on the bottom than the top.  I think CWX makes a most excellent supportive sports bra...you don't need 2!!  I like desoto bottoms and I like the CWX tri shorts too.  Love the zoot tops hate the bottoms.  try this site

I agree with the LG shark fabric - I know someone who has a one-piece trisuit & when they are in  the aero position, you can see right through it from behind.

2 piece great for bathroom breaks.  The trick for me is finding a top that supports me.  Good luck & happy shopping.

I have some really bad pics of me with my gut hanging out of my nice, 2 piece outfit.  Haven't settled on what all I'll wear to IMFL.  Will probably stick with my same old 2-piecer, belly and all . . .

Try eBay.  Last year they had a lot of Descente tri wear online cheap.  I've bought lots of stuff new and slightly used off eBay.  Cheap way to get started (although really, there's nothing cheap about this sport).

I have Tyr shorts and love them and I have a Tyr top that I hate. I love the built in bra but it is so short that it rides up and my race belt always ends up between my shorts and my shirt and it's uncomfortable.

I just ordered a ZOOT long length top and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. That's the only advice I have. Make sure it's long enough!

I'm not a long waisted person either.

I picked up a Danskin one-piece Tri suit from REI for $30 before my first tri...never thought about the whole bathroom thing.  It was not bad.  I liked that I had no gaps...I hate when my shirt rides up.

I have TYR trishorts and a top that are fine if I'm wearing a wetsuit, but cause way too much drag in the water alone. I bought a JAM trisuit because they are really reduced. I like it a lot, but the colors are kind of bright and ugly. I think that's why they never sold well and are now reduced. I wish it was black, but I like that it was cheap! I usually throw a running skirt on over it for the run because I'm a little paranoid about it riding up in an unsightly way, but I think I would be with any trisuit. I also tried some Cannondale trishorts from a discount online retailer, and the seam started coming apart on the first bike ride. I'm not very impressed with the quality of Cannondale apparel.

If you buy stuff from Sierra Trading Post or REI, they have a 100% Guarantee, so you can return it even if you've worn it. Very nice. You can see if it drags, falls apart, rides up, causes too much bounce, etc.

I've worn a few different things and I'm just now starting to get a handle on what I like to wear... which may be very different from what you will find that you like.

I'm one of those "the less clothes the better" folks when I'm exercising. It's so hot down here in So. FL that from March through November I am happiest when my top is nothing more than a sports bra.

In my first race I swam in DeSoto Carerra low-rise tri shorts (don't like the skinny elastic band on these things, but a little birdie at DeSoto told me that they are fixing this for next year... wide, FLATTERING bands are coming) and a sports bra. Threw on a tri jersey in T1 and did the rest of the race like that. For me, the jersey was a waste and it was hot. I should have done without.

For my second race, I wore tri shorts once again but this time I swam with a tight fitting tri tank. The tank collected too much water on the swim and the swim is my strongest element. I wore the same shorts and tank on the bike. In T2 I pulled on a running skirt which had my bib number attached to it. Very cute, girly outfit! I loved the pictures from this race!

For the sprint that I'm doing next week, I plan on racing in nothing more than a swimsuit (wetsuits will probably be legal), swimsuit on the bike and pulling a running skirt on in T2.

For my Oly in 3 weeks, I plan on wearing a 2 piece DeSoto outfit (Micro Tri shorts and bra top); hoping for wetsuit swim and again pulling on running skirt in T2.

For non-wetsuit races next year (which will ony be sprints b/c I can't tolerate the summer heat for longer than that distance), I'll probably opt for a trisuit (Kiwami suits are GORGEOUS) or just a swimsuit.

I think we all go through these types of experiments and a lot of it depends on how well we tolerate our clothing (the less, the better for me) AND what sort of race we are doing. I can get away without a jersey with a gazillion pockets b/c right now I'm only doing sprints and olys. Folks doing longer races usually 'want' those pockets.
