That's right - I'm asking all you fellow trifolks about DRESS shoes for my work - black, works with shirt & tie, but feels as comfy as a sneaker (ideally).

I figured that if there's anybody discerning about their footwear, it's trifolks - even more than runners!

I heard good things about Merrell. Any other brands to consider?

(I'm fed up with standard dress shoes.

I wear just socks at work.  (I wear shoes in, then leave them in my office unless I have to go outside.)  The secretaries think I'm a bit unhinged (and maybe they're right...), but I'm senior enough that nobody can tell me what to put on my feet. Is that an option here?  Because I LOVE walking around in just socks.

I will add that I do have a pair of Merrell shoes and they are quite comfortable to me, but obviously this is very individual.

I have a pair of Donald J Pliner dress shoes that I absolutely love.  They're in the "so pricey its almost retarded" category, but the leather is superb and they're the most comfortable dress shoes I've ever worn.

Man, those are NOTHING in terms of priciness compared to the $3k+ bikes that people are talking about here!

Clarks makes some excellent dress shoes. They are very light and cushioned and a bit ventilated. At least mine are. They are called pr!vio or something.

I'm looking for a pair of comfortable dress shoes for work, too.  I've been pointed toward Echoes--also expensive, but not as pricey as the above-mentioned Pliners.  Anyone have any luck with these?

Mephisto

I've been wearing them for 15 years (not the same pair). They are expensive, up to $350 a pair but they are the best shoes I have ever had. I have had jobs where I have had to stand for 10 hours and it was easy in my Mephisto's. I have had many pairs over the years and you can send them back to Mephisto for refurbishing and they come back better than new.

+1 to this. I bought a pair of Clarks two weeks ago... totally awesome. They are literally almost as light as my running shoes, and have a very cushioned sole. Most comfortable dress shoes I have ever owned.

x2

The best dress shoe you will ever wear. Very comfortable, very well made. You will get what you pay for. Unlike some dress shoes which last a year or two, these last 5 - 10 depending on how well you take care of them.

I used to wear Johnston & Murphy's but they just feel like I'm wearing cardboard by the end of the day.  I picked up a pair of ecco's and they are like wearing tennis shoes to work.  They were a few hundred bucks but I love them.

Bostonian, it takes a few rides to break them in but once you do they are slippers, they will beat anything out there when it comes to milage!

Up until one month ago, I hadn't worn shoes for about 20 years, then my boots imploded and I needed something court-worthy for my feet ASAP so I bought <gasp> shoes.  Worst two weeks of my life - huge craters of blisters on my feet while I waited for these to be delivered:  http://www.sheplers.com/mens/lace_up/028077.html

Never again will I wear shoes.

Some of the Cole Hann shoes have the Nike air technology in the soles, even the winged tip dress shoes.

Very comfortable.

I find Rockports (of all sorts) to be supremely comfortable and long lasting no matter how much you walk.  Not overly stylish but nobody ever accused me of that anyway.

Prefer Rockports; more of a rounded toe look rather than the squared off toes.

1 - For real dress shoes, Bostonian's are my standby since the early '90's. When I started making more money, I found that I still liked them the best. I would have to almost triple the price to get something that I liked better.

2 - I just re-soled some Kenneth Cole Reaction Loafers that I bought for cheap at DSW almost a decade ago. They are squared toe, but I like them for the fit & comfort - not the fashion statement. My brown ones broke in better than my black ones.

3 - For casual with khaki's or nice jeans, but too nice for running shoes, I like the Rockports.

I go through shoes a lot because I often have to walk across school campuses a lot everyday.

I second the Clarks. Best pair if dress shoes under $100. A guy in my office likes his so much he bought the same style in black and brown.
