Subject: So Excited.....
Some background on me..... 44 years old and in the worst shape of my life.... and I got the idea to compete in a triathlon for my 45th birthday.  I am the mother of 10 and the grandmother of 4. So, I talked to my oldest children and told them what I wanted to do and asked for them to do it with me.... had two takers.... my oldest son and second son.
So, the practice was to begin.... and then I got pertussis....
started training a month late.
When I began, my resting heart rate was 109 and I would run for one minute at a time and feel like I was dying.
I have been so discouraged..... have had constant set backs.....
My bike is old and I keep having problems with it, lost my job due to poor economy, travel has prevented training, etc.  My poor son is doing awesome in his training but had his bike stolen the other day and yet we are still trying.  I have spent time in tears asking myself what made me think I could do this in this short of time.
Well, today I decided that time is getting short and I needed to do a bike/run brick the distance.  I have never run more than 2 miles and that was half walking.
Today I rode 12.24 miles and then started to run, right away I was having problems and walking off and on until about half a mile and then it happened.... my heart rate dropped and I just started running..... I was slow but I ran without stopping and it felt amazing.  For those of you that run long distances.... I know my little 3.39 miles is nothing but for me.... it was the best feeling ever!

The amazing part is you have stuck with it even through discouragement and set backs. That's a true testament to your dedication and character. The hardest part of this isn't the racing it's being able to keep moving forward each day when life tries to knock you off course.
Great job!!!!

Good job. Way to keep at it. We all have set backs, and I think we all felt like you feel when we first started, but like you we kept putting one foot in front of the other. Trust me when I say whether you finish first or last, completing the first race will give you the best feeling of accomplishment you could ask for. It is truly one of those things that is for you and you alone. And to share that feeling with a child will make your world.Keep up the good work.

10 kids, 4 grand kids... Im reeling.  Absolutly amazing.  I can't believe you find time to train, let alone have the determination and energy to push through the set backs.  Great job!

Its newbies like you that push newbies like me to train harder!

Great job!

Being consistent and staying at this is huge even with many difficulties.

I only have 5 kids and have had the pleasure to do tris with 4 of them and even got my husband into doing them. The feeling of finishing and knowing your children have done so as well is amazing..makes it so much better.

Great job!! the only thing i can really say about running is don't try to run too fast. I had never been a runner and i got really frustrated when i started running because i could not run every long. I moved it down to 3 minutes per mile slower and i could run 2 times as long. Just because you might not be running as fast you think you are able to, by slowing your run down you will be able to get more distance and build the endurance...you can work on speed later when your able to run longer.

Keep your head up!

I can't thank you all enough for your encouragement... I am one of those people that had to read everything I could possibly find on triathlons before deciding to begin training and I have learned so much I would have never even thought to ask on this site.  I am addicted to reading forum posts and articles.

My one son that will be competing with me in August has his practice times down to 12/24/23...... that is practicing in the gym.  He was already in good shape and running 10 miles each day before I got this great idea so, was a fairly easy transition for him and he keeps telling me.... "this year we complete it.... next year we compete it".

Out of my children 2 will be competing with me..... 2 others want to but can't so are talking about "next year" already (one is 5 months pregnant and one broke his femur a few months ago), 2 are young and want me to sign them up for a kids tri and I have 2 daughters in law that have asked me to please sign up for another and give them more time so they can do the next one with us.  Looks like this may turn into the family pastime!

To echo what another poster said, it's newbies like you that remind not-so-newbies like myself what this sport is all about.  Having a gift of speed and endurance is nice (don't get me wrong, I don't have those gifts), but overcoming obstacles that try to get in the way of a goal is way more amazing to me.  Keep it up and know that you CAN do this.

Also, please let us know how your race goes.  Your first tri is something you will remember for the rest of your life.

Absolutely amazing! You should be sooo proud of yourself for having the courage to start! Most people never even get that far. Hang in there, it gets easier. One day you will look back and remember how hard those first couple of months were and be shocked at how far you've gone.
And, when you finish your first tri the sense of accomplishment will be SO worth all the days of training and then some.

We're pulling for you!!
