I am assuming it is because black is the natural color of the materials used. Has anyone ever successfully changed the color of their wetsuit sleeves to make them more visible? I thought about sliding some of those neon colored "sweet spot" bands (that my kids put on their shoes when playing soccer) over the wetsuit sleeve on my forearm. This may come in handy when swim training in open water, as well as when your friends/family are trying to track you during the triathlon swim.

For a sport so fashion sensitive you'd think for sure the wetsuits would match everything else we compete in.

wouldn't a black wetsuit make you look more like a seal, a common meal for many types of sharks?

Yeah! I need a wetsuit that matches my bike and running shoes. Innocent  But seriously, I would like a brighter color so they could recover my corpse easier after my first OWS!

Greater visibility would be comforting.  Though the super-hero theme doesn't work quite as well for women.  In a Wonder Woman wetsuit, I can't imagine where one would store the lasso of truth!

Somebody posted a thread similar to this a while back, and a picture of a man wearing a neon green wetsuit with a neon green swim cap popped up along the way.
At the only race I've ever worn a wetsuit in, the air temp was about 80 and it was very sunny, and the water was borderline too warm, but they allowed us to wear them. The whole time through the swim all I could think was "my butt is on FIRE!" At the time I was wondering the same thing.
However, I can imagine if the water is 65 or colder and it's sunny out, it could be nice.

I'm pretty sure this guy can be seen from space.

I don't know...can sharks see color?  Any shark experts out there? If they can't, then it'd be mute for that point...but it would help in seeing others in OWS.

That would be me. Here's the lengthy discussion and the answers to your questions should you have nothing better to do. It was quite revealing to say the least.

I am a big shark week fan and I am 95% sure that they said sharks cannot see color. In general sharks have terrible eyesight.

Not an expert, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

They can see in color, not that it would matter, as backlit objects on the surface look black anyway, no matter what color they are wearing.  In addition, sharks can smell you and sense your movement along their lateral line.  Vision is often overrated, as plenty of sharks have no problems finding meals you wouldn't be able to see two feet in.

A step into the ocean is a step down the food chain.  I've been spooked by them while snorkeling (sneaky little guys sometimes), but I have not felt threatened while diving, and I've had Lemon Sharks (have been known to be aggressive) in Jupiter, FL at arm's length.

Because black is the most slimming color and when you are wedged inside a wetsuit, since everything is all squished together anyway, it is the most flattering way to go.

If we're making a wetsuit wish list, what about a wetsuit that keeps you warm in cold water, but doesn't overheat you on the bike and run so you wouldn't have to take it off?  Now there's a project for the engineers!

One of my competitors has an orange wetsuit. Sort of a brick color. It makes it very easy to spot her in the swim wave lineup, so I always try to get on her feet. hehehe.
