Is it just me. I don't like using an aero bottle. The water sloshing around noise, the obstructed view of my bike computer, knowing that straw is sitting right there; I don't know why, but I just don't like it. Anyone else?

That makes two of us, which is why I still have bottle in a cage on my downtube.

I don't mind the sloshing so much, or the straw, but I don't like the rattling it makes when I go over a bump, or the small but sticky Gatorade spritzing I get if it's full. I like smooth and quiet. It sure comes in handy on a long race though. I can carry that plus two water bottles, and I find it's much easier to dump the water, etc., into the aero bottle and drink in the down position, than to slow down a bit, throw my head back and to the side to drink from water bottles.

I have gone to using mine only for longer rides where I need the extra fluid.  Or when I have a training day where I need to stay in the aero position for extended time.  I definetly will use it during races as I drink more when it is sitting right in my face.  The plastic braket as opposed to the rubber bands seems to keep it a little more secure but still rattles a bit.

As far as the computer, I remounted my onto the stem which works pretty good.

The first time I used one I couldn't figure out what the knocking on my bike was. I got used to it and like it better than the one on the down tube. My tri bike only has one cage due to its configuration and I don't want to buy the cages that go on the seat.

Oh no, don't tell me that.

I haven't used an aero-bottle, but I think I've got to get one for my longer race as my frame can only fit one water bottle cage and I don't really want them on the back of the seat.

Here's hoping I enjoy the slosh, slosh, slosh.

This is my conundrum too. Anyone know of an alternative to aero-bottles or behind the seat?

I use the aero bottle and I use a CamelBak. I keep Gatorade in the bottles and water in my CamelBak during long rides. Works well for me. But I agree with the rattling and sloshing of fluids in the aero bottle in bumpy areas. I found that the yellow sponge is useless and does not work. So I have been using clinch-wrap (?) from the grocery store to completely cover the opening. Unfortunately, I have to stop completely to refill. I have been tempted to try the PodiumQuest hydration system (www.podiumquest.com) in place of the aero bottle. But overall and for me, having a CamelBak makes the biggest difference.

Jus to add on to my use of the CamelBak, I ride to and from work (20 miles each way) 3 or 4 times per week. I carry a bigger CamelBak during my commute than the CamelBak I use for only biking. But I am used to wearing a backpack, including in the aero position, so it does not feel uncomfortable to me. It would probably take a little time to get used to for those do not regularly wear a backpack while riding. But I find it to be much more condusive to place everything I need  (e.g., tube, CO2, tools) in my CamelBak than strapping a bunch of items to my bike frame. I would suggest trying different configurations until you find something that feels comfortable and works for you. Everybody is different.

Ditto here on the CamelBack for long (>3 hours) rides. I do the opposite, though, put slightly diluted Gatorade in my Camelback and water in my bottles. The water is mainly to wash down gels and Cliff Bars, and as emergency rations should the Camelback run dry. I also carry enough Gatorade powder (magic pixie dust) to mix up a 24-oz bottle should I need it.

Haven't raced with the Camelback yet, but I would have to be convinced to NOT use it on a half IM race.

One problem with the Camelbak is that it doesn't look good in the photos.

the other down side to the profile aero bottle is that if you ever need to lay your bike down (a flat or something) you loose a bunch of your fluid. it also handles a bit different with the extra weight up front.
on the long (+3hrs) rides, i take a xwing and a aero bottle.
for races (olympic and shorter), i just take one frame mounted bottle.

ha!! Finally, a good advantage to being deaf!!

The only complaint I had about my aerobottle was the spongie thing fell out once in a race and splashed my face every little bump till it was empty.

Aerobottle and two cages and I'm good to go.

I didn't like the aerobottle either...drinking in that position is just plain hard for me.  I DID like having the extra fluid handy tho, and having it in my face reminded me to drink.

Gooogle neverreach. It's an aero bottle system that sits behind you. A camelback style tube follows the top-tube and up under you where the aero bottle sits. It's also got a cap on it with small air hole. The tube comes from the bottom of this teardrop shaped unit.

That rattling (which drives me crazy, too) comes from the bottle shaking against the aerobars, right? There must be some way to rig up a solution for that -- maybe wrapping a little piece of terrycloth around the contact points of your aerobars? I'm going to try that the next time I ride.

:-)

Because yeah -- that noise drives me nuts. And I always feel like I'm about to get an impromptu tracheotomy from that straw! But it really is nice having the extra fluid, and it's way easier to refill on the fly than a regular bottle. I second (third? fourth?) the Camelbak rec, too -- I love mine. Olympic or longer and I wouldn't consider leaving it behind.

Hmm.  I have no problems with mine.  Just using the rubber bands and supplied velcro.  No rattling, never noticed the sloshing, and it's a hell of a lot easier to drink out of than screwing around with bottles.

That neverreach thing looks pretty cool.

The web site is http://www.neverreach.com/page/page/276159.htm

The tube is pretty long though, I wonder how much suction it takes to drink from it? (that was a difficult question to type without opening it to a sexual inuendo )

I cant wait to get an aero drink, should be handy in races when coming out of the water, and you need a solid drink without much hassle.....plus you can drink at a slower more steady pace becuase of the any-time access to the liquid.... i dunno im buying one before i race next spring.

Really? IMHO, I think it looks stupid and bulky hanging off the back of a bike.

My frame is too small to even hold one full size bidon,  so I had to go the behind the seat bottle cages.  I love them have no problems whatsoever using them.

the first time I saw that neverreach thing on a bike I nearly died laughing it looks hilarious like a pee bottle!

I write sonnets and love songs to my aero bottle. It not only keeps me hydrated, but it cosigned my mortgage and bought me a pony for my birthday.

Well, maybe I don't love it quite that much, but while I could do without the occaisonal splash, the benefits far outweigh the down side for me.

Yes I did, as well as the identity of the Resurrector (and the other old threads he/she pulled up to sell Never Reach)
