Subject: Question about Lake Lanier Sprint October
Hello Georgians!  I'm Alice and I am VERY NEW to all this; BT site & triathlons.  I was wondering what people thought about the Lake Lanier race in October.  This will be my first Tri ever and I'm just now getting back into shape after being out for 2 years with pregnancy & new baby.  I don't have much weight to lose now (thank goodness) but need to build endurance & fitness.  My big goal is to do the 1/2 IM in Augusta 2010 so I wanted to do a sprint this fall and then another sprint or Olympic in the spring.

Does anyone know how Lake lanier compares to the Hickory Knob sprint in McCormick SC.  I was told that HK is a tough one to do as a beginner.  Any ideas would be great.
Thanks!

I'm assuming you are talking about the emerald point tri. It is a grat race, very well organized and a good first race. The bike course has 1 hill (not very bad) and the run course has some small rollers, but is not very hilly. I highly reccomend it.

Love the Lake Lanier Sprint!  Was my first tri ever in 2007.  Great course, one nice hill on the bike, slight hill on run, but overall awesome.  Recommend!  I'm doing it this year, hope to see you out!

To avoid confusion, Emerald Point changed names and is now the Lake Lanier Sprint.  It is a great race, lots of fun, and perfect for a first race.  I'll be doing this race again this year.

Great!  Thanks for the help.  Now I'm really committed!Surprised but excited.  Do I need to make sure and register early?  someone said that it fills up quick.

Thanks again and happy trails.

It'll fill up but you still have time.  That said, if you are going to do it no reason not to just get signed up, it really helps with motivation on those days when you'd rather not train.

Worst hill of the whole race is in the transition from the lake to the bike.

KNS is right on the money - that transition climb from the lake is silly.

The race is great though - last year's shirt was kind of cool too (long sleeve technical). I always get a couple comments whenever I wear it.  Due to large crowds they now make you pick up your packet and drop your bike off on Saturday, so you'll have to make 2 trips up to the park...just something to consider if you don't live close by.

Good luck!

In January I could barely run 1 mile on a treadmill.  In early March I did a 2/10/2 duathlon on a very hilly course (cloverleaf) and have now done 10ks and 2 sprint triathlons.  If my fat butt can do it then anyone can.

1st time hearing of this race.  I'll probably have to give it a try but it might be the weekend of my family reunion so who knows.

That is a great race! It was also my first race back in 2007. I did it a week after returning from my honeymoon, so I had plenty of extra booze weight during it. As others have said, only one hill on the bike, and you can get half way up it with the momenume for the decent before it. The run is small semi-rolls. Not completely flat, but gentle ups and downs.

Yes, the hardest hill is in the run to T1. That is a nasty little hill, but you are up and over in less than 30 seconds.

I did this race in 2006 and really enjoyed it. The lake was low and they changed the swim to a point-to-point from the south beach to the north beach. So it was different than the course map on the website. How has the swim been the last two year?

Also, I noticed this year they have mandatory bike drop off and packet pick Saturday afternoon. You must leave your bike in transition over night.

I think everyone here has said it already but the race is a really good one and would be great for you as a first timer.  The hill heading into T1 is the worst thing you will see all day.

Agreed! Did the IronGirl Tri - which is essentially the same, just a bit longer - in June. You will really enjoy this course! The hill into the transition area is "crazy", but you can handle it!

I have a question about the bike drop off.

That Saturday I have a family reunion so I won't be able to drop my bike off.  If all that needs to be dropped off is my bike, can I have a buddy of mine who his going to race it also drop my bike off for me?  Or do I need to be present.  If not then I can do the race, if I need to be there then I can't.

You should contact the race officials. Typically you do  need to be present with ID to pick up your packet and check in your bike. They MAY  be able to make an exception if you give your friend a copy of your DL... but I have done races where you MUST be present...

I'm signed up as well this will be my first.

I actually live right up the street (5 miles from my door to the lake lanier island gate) and when I was doing errands the weekend of iron girl I was seeing the cars loaded with bikes and got motivated to get back on mine (had started swimmig again weeks before and running on and of)

can't wait!

I'll have to do that.  I just wasn't sure if it was just so you could drop your bike off and then maybe pick up your packet on race day.  I'll have to find out for sure if my buddy decides to do it before I commit.

I do plan to do the sprint tri on St. Simons the week after so if I miss out it's not a big deal.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but does anyone know how this event (Lake Lanier Sprint) compares to the Tri2 Remember Sprint in September?  It appears to be organized by the same people.  I can't make the one in October, but want to try for the one in September.  It'll be my first.
Thanks.

I can't comment about the actual race since I've never done it but the race director is top notch. GA Multisports does an awesome job of putting on races. Every one I've ever done has been a good experience.

I've done both races and they are vary comparable.

Swim - both 400m and wave start
T1 - Lake Lanier has a large hill to run up to the bikes, T2R's is smaller
Bike - T2R's is a few miles longer but less hilly.  There are 2 larger ones in the first 4 miles, but nothing much after that from what I remember.
T2 - same
Run - some small rollers in both.

I noticed that both of the races require bikes to be checked in the day before.  Don't know the reason for that, but something to consider since I believe T2R is on Sat and LL is on Sun, so if you're working on Fri. it could be more difficult to get over to T2R.

I think the early drop off is to alleviate the crowd at check in on race day....the Lake Lanier race started late last year because they couldn't get people into the remote parking lots and through check-in quickly enough.

It is a fun race though.

I hate to be saying this but today when my girlfriend and I went to sign up for the race we found out that registration is closed.  What we are hoping for is someone that is signed up that will be unable to attend so we can transfer into their positions.  If any one knows someone who is going to be unable to attend please let us know.  And of course we will pay the entrance fee, but we are not looking to buy our way in.

I'm in the same boat trying to register to find it closed. I've got a friend registered and couldn't sign up before now due to a possible work assignment. If anyone knows someone who has canceled, I'd like to buy their entry ticket.
Thanks,

Coldfire - 2009-07-09 1:17 PM Yes, the hardest hill is in the run to T1. That is a nasty little hill, but you are up and over in less than 30 seconds.

If you happen to pop back in or if anyone else knows. Where about are the mats placed? I keep seeing people say this run is long and uphill so it sucks, just curious how much of this up hill run is included in peoples swim times when looking at previous years results. Are you saying 30 seconds running up hill from getting out of the water to the mat? or like 30 seconds up hill for just the hill and then another 30 seconds to the mat?

Just really been curious when trying to see where I may sit

Thanks.

After the swim, you hit the mat fairly early, then you're in T1...and the hill still looms...it's a long T1 for a sprint race...
