I want to do a July or August 1/2 Iron in 2009 and see that I have these two choices.  Which one is a better race?  Has anyone done both?  Is there another 1/2 Iron besides these two?

I prefer Timberman ... it's a lake swim - single transition - nice bike and run courses, themed aid stations and bands on the course with the athletes being very well supported, and it's not in a city. Much more of a party atmosphere but with some very serious athletes... the pro list looks like a who's who in the triathlon world.

RI 70.3 is an ocean dual transition... you either have to get yourself to the swim start or pay WTC to get you there on one of the buses. Not saying RI is a bad race it's just very different than Timberman... after all it IS suppose to be fun.
