Subject: A first-timers question
Hi all!

I'm doing my first tri this Sunday at Buzzard's Bay.  My question is - how do I keep myself warm before the race?  If I wear a sweatshirt before the swim - what do I do with it when my wave is called?  Are tri's like road races where people wear garbage bags before the race and then throw them into a garbage can right before the gun sounds?  Do y'all have any suggestions?

Thanks a ton!

Welcome!

Do you have anyone you trust watching the race to whom you can hand the clothes before your wave?

For me, my wetsuit has always been enough to keep warm in air temps down to 55, especially it its sunny. I can't recall racing in lower temps.

The swim starts are pretty open and easygoing, so if there is someone with you, you'll be able to stand near them until the last minute.

Another option is to go to a thrift store and buy a sweatshirt for $1 and then just toss it. If it's still there when you get back, great. If not, no loss. (Just make sure it doesn't become litter, obviously.)

I've never seen anyone with a trash bag, though that does seem like a good idea.

Now that I have a wetsuit, I just keep warm using that. But if you aren't wearing one or don't have one, I would take something. I don't like being all shivery while I wait. Especially if I warmed up in the water and then have to stand there dripping and freezing. This is on my mind because I am in the last wave in my race next weekend. So lots of standing around after the warmup period and before my wave is called.
