Subject: An option for overcoming treadmill boredom?
Living in new england where it is starting to get cold and dark before and after work, I am doing more and more running on the treadmill.  I can barely stomach 30-45 minutes on the treadmill, let alone more than an hour.  What if any is the fitness effect on breaking up, say a 1 hr run, into 2 30 min runs, 1 in the AM and 1 in the PM?  I realize the 1 hour run is better but how much?

I cant imagine running on a treadmill but if I were to do it, I wouldnt split it up.  Try to place a tv in front of it or get a laptop computer go to Hulu.com or some tv website and watch tv while running.   If your serious about improving I wouldnt watch tv or listen to music because personally I find they distract me from my rhythm.  Plus headaches can ensue after long runs.  But if you get bored, I dont know ...

It's cold and dark here in MN so I hear where you're comin' from. Learn to run in the cold and/or dark. Only icy or deep snow conditions chase me to the dreadmill.

I'm upstate NY and unless it's icy I prefer to run outside, bundled up however necessary.  I even run in 2ft snow - and it's a darn good workout.

However I do sometimes do treadmill work if I am working on something where accurate pacing is handy and it's miserable outside.   Having to do x intervals at y pace keeps your focus going nicely.  I HATE running for more than 30mins on a treadmill though.

Now as long as you are not doing your long run of the week then it is perfectly fine to split an hours run into 2x 30min sessions to get your mileage in.  But make sure you are serving the purpose of that workout(s

X's 3 from Michigan. But I have been known to split up run to get the mileage in. Man I strongly dislike treadmills.

x3. It's barely October yet...you have much colder and darker days ahead of you. Unless it's really dangerous for you to run in the dark where you are, get outside! Don't split up your runs. Ice and snow are deterrents for running outside, but temps are not.

Nothing better then running during a snowfall at night. It's really quite and beautiful.

Don't go in now. As long as you keep running outside you'll get accustomed to the cold.

A headlamp for outdoor runs is highly recommended too.  Not only is it a lot safer, it creates my own little bit of sunshine by my face.   I think it's partly psychological.  It's also a lot faster since I don't have to worry about twisting an ankle.  Get outside!!!  The only time I run indoors due to weather/darkness is if the meteorologists warn me that might skin will freeze

must've been a cold day in Hopkins when your avatar photo was taken

if you are stuck on the treadmill - i like to add a mental component. it is boring, so get in a mental zone and block out the boredom. focus on the mechanics of your running, focus on your breathing, focus on a spot on the wall and tell yourself how tough you are and that you won't look at your watch for ten more minutes. do treadmill fartleks to break the monotony.

just some thoughts.

Good one.  That was a race, actually.  And - it was about -20 that day, so it would have qualified.

-20 yikes!! I have set strict limits: >30F for a bike ride and >0F for a run. The run temperature was adjusted upwards after i went out in -10 + wind. the last mile i jogged backwards to protect my sensitive side. i am curious about the treadmill race.

sorry for the hijack

Maybe you can do cross country skiing instead of your long run. I can tolerate the treadmill if it's a super hard workout, threshold sets or intervals. Ditto with bike trainer. Another thing I like the treadmill for is to concentrate on fast feet and other elements of running form. Try to pick you feet up before they move back with the belt. And set up a mirror or webcam to observe yourself running. You'll see all kinds of little twitches and stuff to try and fix. At least I did. So, in short, make it hard to make it interesting.

Go to the Runner's World website www.runnersworld.com and search for treadmill worksout. They have a few different ones listed there. I've done a couple of the treadmill hill workouts and they make it much easier to run on the treadmill without a lot of boredom!

Good Luck!

The weather was so bad in Wisconsin last year that I did nearly all of my long runs on the TM leading up to Boston.  Before that I hated the TM and avoided it unless it was icy.

The way I got through it was using  my IPOD, a mirror and lots of visualization of running a race- the tough spots, the easy efforts and crossing the finishing line.  Like one of the other posters said  it became a mental exercise for me.  I used the mirror to watch my form and changed it when it looked off --arrm swing, pelvic tilt, etc.

I am sure I will be doing some of my training on a TM this winter and while I am not looking forward to it it is better than the alternative of not running.

I have the same weather difficulties here in Michigan. Investing in some long sleeve gear and running outside (yes, in the dark with a headlamp) is much better than running on the treadmill.

Treadmill runnning can be so boring and monotanous.  One strategy I use is to make the runs variable and unpredictable (within reason of course). for example, watch a football game and set parameters eg.  a fumble means a 1 minute sprint, interception means increase the grade for 3 minutes, etc.  This also works when on my bike trainer.  Sprint during commercials, etc.  It's still not the same as outside but this helps me tolerate it better.

Run outside as much as you possibly can.  It makes it a lot easier to run on the treadmill if you are doing fewer workouts on it.

Place a bet on an NFL game.  I just got through 12 miles without much trouble this afternoon!  At the gym for 1:44 I was able to have fun by watching the game, the girls in front of me, and concentrating on form (mine not theirs).
