Subject: When is the best month to buy a used tri bike?
This is my first year.  First I bought a old Trek 370 with CycleOps $140, then a Felt F65 with aero bars $600.  So, I am cheep.

The Trek came with a CycleOps and I plan on keeping it there.  I also thought I would keep the road bike, but I am thinking about a Tri bike.

I thought sometime between now and March would be the best time to get something from E-bay or Craigslist.  Thoughts?  Bang for the buck on a Tri bike and timing.

Never gave this any thought.  I know that the fall/winter is when you'll get the best deal on boats.  I'm thinking there are two schools of thought.  1.  buy in the late fall, early winter as maybe people will decide "that's it, I'm out" and sell their bike.  or 2.  Early spring thinking there will be some who decide to clean out their garage and get rid of some things they never use any more.  Or 3. (ok, so I just thought of another one) in the summer when it get really hot and people decide 'to hell with this, I'm going to sit under the air conditioner...and sell that stupid bike.

OK, I'm sure this was zero help.  Something else to consider is your LBS....as they start getting in next year's models in the early fall, they will want to get rid of used bikes to make room in their store for the new stuff.  OK, so that is #4.

The 2010 models just started coming out about a month ago, a lot of them haven't even gotten to shops yet.  This is a great time to find a clearance '09 model that's still brand new but just "last years model".  Otherwise I'd suspect that craigslist/ebay, the best monetary deals would be starting now until about January depending on the part of the country because of the temperature.  But with that you'll probably also have less selection since it's not the peak time to sell a bike either since.

Used, I say that the bulk of the price depreciation has already happened and late fall through late winter isn't going to yield that much extra for you regardless of next years models coming out.  The value will be more based on the condition of the bike and the urgency of the seller and the market for it which is case by case for some bikes depending on the size and weather or not you are super short/right in the middle/or on the tall side.

New, I picked mine up in February last year.  Bike stores in CT are empty in February and what they didn't move from the year before is starting to take up valuable "shelf" space as they look to restock.  The lack of volume and foot traffic puts you in a pretty good spot.  I'd imagine Michigan being the same way...

I'd agree with your post, but maybe wait a couple months....that way the people flocking to the 2010s will be looking to move their bikes...
