WHen doing a race what do I wear?

My first race I wore a bike jersey for the swim and put my race number in my tri shorts by the crotch and my T1 time was horrible and my swim time was pathetic.

What is best to wear for a warm weather race that I dont have to fidgit with for 1-2 minutes? Please link some example and also what do you do about your race number?

AND 2nd,Ive been training for over a year so even though ive only done 1 race my fitness is really high and im considering race wheels, I wanted to know how do you determine what conditions are right for 808/ disc setup? ANd is riding with this setup in wind really as bad as it sounds?

I saw that many of the fast HIM and olympic guys like Potts and Reed use that setup and it seems they use it in every race. I know here in St pete florida we get wind and they still used it in the st anthony race, so i was wondering if you have good balance and strong core if it is more doable then what is normally thought not to be the case?

please link any useful information!  thx BT

Doing my 5th Tri this Sunday so not exactly an expert but Tri top and tri pants worked best for me.  (I use Aevero or Orca pants, and Aevero top, I have hear Desoto and Pearl Izumi are great also)    Get a race belt to pin your number to and then you can clip it on at T2.  Wear the Tri top on the swim.

Can't help you on the race wheels but Velorider62 is in florida (not sure if she has done St. Anthony) and has race wheels.  She (along with others here can help).

Good luck.

For the race number, I wear it on the swim too.  Prior to the race, I crunch & wad it up a bunch of times, so it gets nice & soft.  I stuff it down the back of my tri shorts for the swim (wetsuit or not).  Funny you mention Reed - in my last two tri's, I went with a Big Matty Reed signature model racebelt - it's actually just a single Xtendex elastic lace Wink - it works great for being low-profile & comfy, but sometimes the race number gets all scrunched up on the lace bumps - I'm still working that issue out, but I love the idea overall compared to a traditional race belt.

Recommend doing the swim in a tri top, not a bike jersey.  Bike jerseys aren't made to swim in - tri tops are.

I use 808s front & back for race wheels. Love 'em.  I had the option of going with a 909/disc combo or the 808s, and I have no regrets with my 808s.  I understand a disc may be more ideal in nice conditions, but if I'm gonna throw down $$$ for wheels, I want to use them in any race conditions, hurricane or otherwise.

Cheers, Chris

What to wear?
Tri top and tri shorts or a tri suit. Dries very quick and won't slow you down in the water

Wheels?
The 808's are great wheels, if you have the experience to handle them and the weight to keep them stable in gusty conditions. It all comes down to would you be comfortable with them? Keep in mind that they can theoretically save a few seconds over a pair of 404's (or 303's for that matter) over 40k, but you could actually end up being slower if you are being pushed around and can't get comfortable because of that... I've tried 808's and with my 160lbs. and many years of cycling, I know that I could only ride them in calm conditions... for me, not worth the money since I can't use them often enough.

I would say that one of the best combinations is something like a 404 (or even 303) depth front with an 808 rear. Or Hed jet 50/60 front with a 90 rear.
