Jackson, Mississippi
United States
Leonard E. Warren Memorial

Sunny
Total Time = 28m 57s
Overall Rank = 124/211
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 12/17
Pre-race routine:

I spent most of the day riding in the car moving horses, and pulling out t-posts from the ground about an hour before the race. When I got downtown, drank some gatorade, jogged lightly. This was my first PM race of the year and the hottest temp by far.
Event warmup:

Light jogging around downtown.
Run
  • 28m 57s
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

I sucked. I tried sprinting away and this time I led the race for about the first 100 yards. That was cool. Maybe if I'm lucky one of the local photographers got a picture of me at the front that will get in the paper :p Gosh, I sure wish I could keep up that pace for 3.11 miles! :p

BTW, in a race as short as this, run/walking does NOT help with your time. I stopped briefly to walk as I just felt bad. As I noted in my training log, when it became apparent that no PR/PB was in the offing, I went into survival mode and just tried to have fun with the girls at the second water stop. I grabbed two cups and dumped it on my head (that felt pretty good too) and then a third cup I gulped down. The cool feeling lasted about maybe 50 yards, right as the High Street Hill started.
What would you do differently?:

Take a rest day the day before next time. Even though all I did was cycle yesterday, my legs were beat, I was tired, and somewhat mentally fried.

I've got to find something more comfortable to run in, shirt-wise. At the Race for the Cure, I wore a loose wicking shirt. It felt gross as hell when I was done. This time, I tried some generic (and tight fitting) under armour. That felt even grosser. Ironically, the t-shirt for the race is ALSO a Brooks wicking shirt LOL but its a loose fit.

I don't think I'm a very good night runner. My log times seem to indicate I'm better in the morning. Makes sense, I'm more of a morning person.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got a cold diet coke, some gatorade, walked back to the car and put on a dry shirt.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics. Only 3 1/2 months of running under my belt, and the Heat. It felt like I was dragging an extra 15 pounds the entire race.

Event comments:

Not my worst race that I can ever remember, but I hope this is my low point for this year when it comes to running races. I don't think I'll do any more PM races - I'm going to have to really think whether I want to do the Brick Street 5K in Clinton later this month; that one starts at 7 pm. I'm usually pretty beat by that time of the day. :)

Hey!  So you just put this one into the books.  The great thing is you've evaluated your performance and applied it going forward.  You can't have PR's without PW's.  You appreciate them just that much more!    AND!  You found the silver lining to make the race FUN!  If it's not fun, why are we doing them?!?!  KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

OK, best, worst, whatever.  You went out and did it, you found a way to have fun, the water stop girls were cute, and you have another t-shirt to add to your collection!
