The term clipless never made sense to me.  I've been told that the pedals that preceeded modern pedals had to be clipped in.  So is the term "clip in" just a hold over from that era?  How did the old clip in pedals work?

In the old days, pedals had either a flat platform or a cage.  The front of the cage was considered the toe clip for the shoe. When the first clipless pedals came out, they were called clipless to distinguish them from the older cage/toe clip models.  Even though you clip in, like a ski binding.

The old pedals had toe cages, or clips. The newer ski-binding-type of pedal configuration have no clips = clipless

So when we say "We'll clip in at 7:30" that is an artifact or hold-over from the 'old days', right?
