Champion 7233![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??i do now, at least in sprint races (something about swimming for 20-30 min is not really fun for me). the 30 sec before the swim are the most fun part of it. i love standing in the water waiting for the gun to go off, there is a ton of nervous energy and then it all just shatters with the start. soo cool. 4-5 min into the swim, i pretty much hate my life and all enjoyment for the rest of the race is gone;-) |

Veteran 295![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??Not sure I exactly love the swim portion (since its open water)...guess its more love/hate relationship. I still get extremely nervous, but once I get going its smooth sailing and I really enjoy it. I always over prepare for the swim, but still worry about it the most. Swimming in general I have fallin in love with. I love going to the gym and swimming in the pool...so relaxing and stress relieving...and I'm amazed at how much my body has adapted physically to swimming...just 8 months ago I could not swim one length..now I can do 70 with out stopping. I also credit swimming to getting over my body image issues...now very proud of my body and wear what I want with confidence. I also get an urge to just go swimming after two days...I can't imagine not swimming for a week....ahhhhh. Edited by meblack 2009-09-08 11:54 PM |

Veteran 215![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??My second tri last month was my first OWS and I loved it, even though I was not doing a lot of passing and not near the front of the swim pack for sure. I had really mentally prepared myself and when the time came I was looking forward to it--was not nervous at all. I love no walls the most, swimming from buoy to buoy. It was a blast. I have another coming up this Saturday and I'm just as excited. I had even forgotten to make a point of moving off to the side to avoid the commotion for the start and did had a bunch of faster swimmers swimming over parts of me. It was annoying, but not terrible. I was just enjoying the experience. |

When I first discovered scuba diving I felt like I was in heaven. I love swimming, surfing, scuba diving, water polo, syncronized swimming, sailing, body surfing, boogie boarding, wind surfing, boating, and anything else to do with water. Instead of being a Taurus, I should have been a pices. As far as Triathlons, I wish the swimming was the longest part, and biking is my newly found love, and still hate running. (sorry runners) |

I've been free diving in the Yucatan and a few caves. I just feel at peace when im in the water. Sometimes late at night i go to the neighborhood pool and sit underwater taking just a single breathe between holds, I can hear my heart beat sometimes, its definitely meditative. Water is absolutely fascinating and I'm drawn to it. |

I'm not great at it but it's cool to see how you can improve your 100m times etc. I love the water and summer. |

Pro 4528![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??love the swim, favorite part of the race followed closely by the bike. Swimming is the one skill that is even for all competitors, either you can swim or you can't. Size, or should i say weight, has nothing to do with performance unlike the other two. It is technique and practice that make you swim well. I love the open water, swimming with friends and not being comfined. And the start of the race with all the adrenaline is the coolest feeling in the world!!! Then the gun or horn goes off and it is the one time in the race where contact is not frowned upon or will hurt someone and then it is you and the water, no talking, just pure concentration. |

Champion 10157![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alabama | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??Why I love to swim: 1. Because I float. Well, sort of. And floating is as close to zero-G that any of us is likely to ever experience. It's like taking a trip to the moon or to the International Space Station. 2. I'm about 67% water myself....so am naturally 'at home' in the water. 3. Exercise with zero impact. 4. It's clean. Even though you sweat in the water, you still come out smelling clean...or smelling like chlorine. 5. The earth is 2/3rds covered with water and 1/3 covered with land....so swimming is a very practical skill to have on this big blue marble we live on. 6. If you are comfortable swimming, SCUBA diving is easy...and opens a whole new world...and new fantastic voyage. 7. No special gear is needed - goggles and swim shorts/jammers and I'm swimming. And in a pinch, you don't need goggles or swim shorts.... 8. Swimming does not leave tracks or a trail....so if I'm evading capture.....well, just sayin'....
I love to swim. I love to bike and I love to run. Do I like one more than the other two? Hard to say...I like them for different reasons....each has pros/cons. ~Mike |

Grew up at the pool and the Jersey Shore, so that could explain a lot. I love to get in the water and just zone out while I'm swimming...it helps to just relieve all the stress/tension of the day for me. Even when I don't want to go, if I can get myself to the edge of the water, I know I'll be fine! |

Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??I like it because I learned to swim at a young age, and am comfortable and confident in the water, even if I'm not the fastest. I only do sprints, so I tend to place pretty well, since sprints tend to draw lots of newbies who can't swim or are afraid of it. So it means there are lots of people to pass |

Pro 4824![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Houston | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??I saw my first 25 yards in March and I was terrified at my first tri in May. The swim is my favorite part. I think I like it the most because it's the only time I'm not in pain. I am not fast on the bike and being on a bike is not comfortable, getting better but still after a few miles not comfortable. The run for me is pure misery. I am slow and struggling the whole time. My next and last tri of the season is a sprint with a 300 meter swim - If I had my druthers it would be 3 times that long - with a 10 mile bike and 2 mile run rather than the 14 mile bike and 3 mile run. |

Member 65![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??Bopper - 2009-09-09 6:45 AM Pool swimming... it's ok... OWS... Bliss!!! Swimming is number 2 behind cycling (sorry runners... can't do it). I enjoy going to the beach and frolicking in the waves... love snorkelling... love scuba... love just swimming for as long and as fast (or more precisely SLOW) as I like. The family knows that if we go to the beach, I'm taking my wet suit and going for a long swim at some point. It IS meditative... just you, the water, the wind, and the waves... and the occasional sea gull that thinks you're a big fish. I miss it when I've been away too long... Enjoy the water... it's not a big bad scarey place. This sums it up for me-- if I'm away fromt the water, my gills dry out. I love ows because there are no walls, In the pool, during a long swim I always get annoyed at the walls - I love being out in the ocean where I can just get into a rhythm and go...... |

New user 15 Littleton, CO | Subject: RE: Anyone love the swim??I love swimming...it is the only reason I'm even attempting a Tri...swam competitively in HS and always felt I belonged in the water...maybe because I'm a pisces? I'm at peace in the water - you can tune out other noises, no one can talk your ear off, my own thoughts, comfortable, don't sweat - well you do but that's another story - hard to injure yourself and the freedom of movement - who can do a sumersault on land and not get hurt or dizzy? You use your whole body and don't have to rely on the strength of just legs. If I could live underwater I would, take me snorkeling and I'm in heaven. Put me in a pool and I feel like a frisky seal. Put me in a wetsuit and i'll look like a beached whale - just don't advertise orca on my chest, but hey floating, diving, swimming and bouyancy are bliss. |

(sorry runners) I'm a complete clutz on land but in the water I feel graceful and powerful as I glide through the water. I've always loved the water and loved it even more when I started swim team and actually learned how to swim at age 6. I love the feeling of buoyancy, and how the water embraces my body. For me, nothing compares being in the water. |
