I've read suggestions to cut down on fibre a few days before a big race (suggestions include replacing whole grain bread with white bread etc).

I have a high fibire diet (lots of fruit and vege and wholegrains) so would be worried about switching to low fibre options and perhaps "clogging up the works".

Anyone care to share their experiences?

I think this falls under the category of "do what works for you." I, too, have a high fibre diet but, other than dinner the night before a race (I keep it light), I do not change my pre-race diet. In fact, my pre-race breakfast is always a big bowl of oatmeal with flax, wheat bran, and some sort of in-season fresh fruit. It works for me. That said, I know several folks who just cannot tolerate much pre-race fibre. Everyone's GI system works differently, again, do what works for you.

I think the suggestion to reduce fiber intake is so you don't carbo-UNload mid race. I tend to eat more fiber in the days before so I don't lock up and have the heavy gut feeling.

x2. I have to eat a lot of fiber, or things don't "work" the way they are supposed to. Basically, I just avoid any really "dangerous" items/cuisines likee spicy food, Mexican/Indian, beans, a few days beforehand and make sure to drink lots of water. I also just make sure I wake up super-early to make sure I'm all set before the race starts I don't switch to white bread or anything - I can eat a whole wheat bagel for breakfast and have no stomach problems (a whole wheat bagel isn't fiber-y enough to cause issues, since they're mostly made with refined flour). Just make sure you know what works for you - ie, eat like you would pre-race, before long rides/runs.

I think it's a bad suggestion.  Eat normally.  And a cup or 2 of coffee in the morning is all I need to make sure the 'plumbing' is clean for racing.

I actually reduce fiber starting 2-3 days before (marathons). I get serious stomach issues, one time having to 'go' 5 times! It was awful.

I used to use immodium to 'clog the plumbing' but then I had to start using too much and it worked too well...

So, I just cut out the fruit 3 days before, cut down veggies 2 days before. I eat more protien and carbs. I don't eat any veggies day before.

But thats just me. I'm not saying you should do it, but it works for me.
