Subject: Help! Injured soleus/lower leg area. Should I try a Nov. tri?
Hello, I apologize for this being lengthy, so only read if you're interested in helping a newbie get some insight into her first sports injury and where to go from here. Because I need help!

Training was going great until a few weeks ago, when I was on a nice run and felt some pain start to build in my left lower leg. Gradually it worsened, to the point where I had to stop running and limped back the 2 miles to my car. R.I.C.E.D and took Aleve for a couple days. Three days later (8-26) I was leaving work (I'm an ER nurse, so it's alot of walking) and I felt this horrendous ripping POP and instant onset of pretty severe pain and inability to walk normally. Limping to my car is my new sport, it seems. WOW did it hurt. It was ok at rest but I was unable to weightbear or walk. Flexion and extension of the foot were also excruciating. I'm sure I tore a muscle back there, likely the soleus. It's a pretty distinct feeling, and a first for me. I went to an urgent care, they wouldn't see me and said I needed a specialist. I didn't get in to a doctor for diagnostics (try getting a referral to a California ortho when you live in Florida. Out of network, blah blah blah. I hate HMO's.) ANYWAY... Was off work a week, R.I.C.E.D and was able to walk somewhat normally by the end of that week, but any sort of position change or surface level change caused discomfort. I lost almost 3 weeks training.

NOW...I can walk normally, pain free. I can swim. I did a spin class this morning (didn't want to risk limping back to my car AGAIN) and felt GREAT. Afterwards, felt a little spasm, like a rubber band jiggling. Swimming seemed to stretch it out, as I swam after Spin class. But no pain or discomfort at all. Jogging, however, is still an issue. I jogged 11 minutes earlier this week, probably 15 minutes yesterday. I felt some twinges of discomfort and would stop. But I was taking it VERY easy, my thinking is to VERY gradually try and progress.

So I'm not sure what to do from here? My tri is on Catalina Island in November. While it's not what I WANTED to do, it seems to me that I can walk the final event, and still have an enjoyable experience. But i'm getting alot of feedback from other people (not triathles) that I'm unrealistic and going to risk further injury.

So what I'm asking (FINALLY, i know) is if anyone has experienced this, and feedback on if they think it's realistic to try and complete a tri in November. And without giving "medical advice", any stretching and strengthening pointers are appreciated! Thanks!

hi.. it may be an achilles problem .. are you having trouble with it after 1 or 2 months ? if so it is an achilles tear and in that case - no, dont do the tri...

if its just a soleus pull, and thats what it sounded like at first, then it should have healed by now.

what you can do in the meantime is use a foam roller or the "stick" to roll out the muscle(s) and get some blood flowing in there.. then start by doing light jogging for a few minutes alternating between walk and light jog every few minutes ..

i know lower leg problems hurt and take forever to heal, but do be careful.

Sounds likea  gastroc/soleus injury.  Muscle injuries takea  while to heal, ad the problme is it starts to feel better, you forget about it, try to run across the street or something and BAM hurts again.  It really takes about 6 weeks to get over. Try wrapping it with an ace wrap.  Cont with the ice and calf stretches.  Swimming and biking should be fine....walk your run in your race.

You guys ROCK! This was just the advice that I needed to decide to go for it. I know I'd be disappointed if I didn't. It was so demoralizing to get injured. But I feel like I'm on the right track. Since this is my first tri, I don't think there is any shame in walking the run anyway. Not what I intended but plans change.

So what is a fluff roller or whatever? I saw those terms when I was searching the forums when I first was injured. New terms for me.

FYI , I'm quite certain it's a gastroc/soleus injury, as it's incredibly easy to localize the injury to that region, as well as it's healing pattern seems consistant as well. It's higher than I'd suspect an achilles injury. Perhaps next time my injuries will be more considerate to occur in my HMO network and I won't have to rely on webmd, etc. . Thanks again.

I had the same thing happen to me in 2005 (soleus), I'll never forget the sound and feeling when it happened.  It took me about 8 weeks to get back to running, but had problems running after the bike with out a good stretch.  Had a slight reoccurrance in 06 but then I got massage therapy.  That was the ticket as the therapist really worked the scar tissue and other issues it had caused.  I haven't had any major calf muscle issues since but still suffer from some tightness and achilles/heel issues.  I really recommend getting a $35 focused massage on the calfs asap.  Today I perform self massage and use "the stick" along with heat and cold therapy on my legs.

Oh, I changed my running gait after this happened to me to a mid foot landing with higher stride rate, before I was more of a long strider with heel landings.

Also make sure your bike seat height is set properly (fitting), too high can lead to lower leg issues too.

Feel free to walk, jog-walk, whatever, on the tri run.  I did a long course last year were this guy was power walking the run portion.  Best of luck...

Oh, wanted to add, make sure you are targeting the Soleus when stretching with this stretch:

This is one of many I do regularly for my legs and lower back.

An Update:

While doing the Mens Health urbanathlon on Sept 27, my right calf (the one that ALWAYS bothers me) blew up.. it was very close to very bad .. suffice to say I HTFU and finished the race .. 5 days later I went for a MFer of a deep tissue massage on the calf, soleus, IT band and hamstring .. lots of ice over the last 2 weeks, no running for 2 weeks (had to blow off a charity 10K)
Today: Westchester 1/2 marathon in 1:52:42 - not great.. but exactly what I was hoping to do.. i ran at about 3/4th speed and really watched (felt) my legs, calves and ran a "managed" race..

so.. maybe a heavy deep tissue massage by a sports oriented therapist and lots of ice may help you do the run part of your Nov. tri

- i'm jealous that you can do a Nov. tri BTW..
