In 3 months of preseason training I was easily getting in 2 20 min core strength sessions a week. Now that training is all on I'm struggling to make time for these, and when I do I often feel tired and like I'm not getting good quality from it.

How important is it amongst my training?

Thanks

I prioritize my training sessions.  S/B/R is top priority; then core, stretching/yoga, weight/strength training (in that order).  I never miss a S/B/R session in order to fit in the others.

However, when it comes to core, I really try to make an effort to do those sessions.  During the last 3 years, I have totally eliminated my back pain by doing core training.  So, for me, core training is very important (I probably am not as consistent with it as I should be).

unless you have specific core issues (injuries/pain) not so much. You get plently of core strenght by swimming, biking and running. you want to add specific? do flip turns and add fly stroke. Do running drills and ride hill repeats standing up.

To add to what Jorge said, I do have specific issues and even my physical therapist recommends ceasing all PT (which for me at this point is mostly core work) when my training volume gets higher. I am actually about to start working my PT routine back into my training schedule again (although probably not for another month when things at work settle down and I have the time, for now I can barely fit in my swim bike run).

Check with any swim coach and they will tell you core is the key. Check with any cyciling coach and they will tell you core is they key. I firmly believe with a weak core the rest crumbles. If you don't have any specific problems I would say you can cut it back but I wouldn't eliminate it. I'm sure you can fit in 10-15 minutes after a workout to do a little core workout. There are numerous studies relating core work to increased speed on the bike, especially when climbing. Over the long haul a strong core will keep you healthier and stronger. I wouldn't get rid of you core program.

I've started to add core/stretching while I watch T.V.....It seems to help.
