Subject: Referral for plantar fasciitis

Hi all,

I know we've had questions here asking for referrals for sports medicine before (I searched for and read them), but I'm here to ask for another... Can anyone recommend a doctor with whom they've had good results treating plantar fasciitis in particular? Mine is just raging, and I can't get rid of it. I work in downtown St. Paul and live in Hastings, so St. Paul or the east/SE metro would be best but I'm willing to go wherever if someone has encountered a true miracle worker for PF.

Thanks

I have not used them for P.F., but Spine and Sports Institute in Maple Grove is very good with soft tissue stuff.  I'd call to see if they do anything for P.F. first, though.

When I had a mild case last year, I saw my physician and she prescribed some exercises for me.  She also recommended Advil.  Mine lasted a little over a week.  Flared up like crazy in the morning, but not so bad during the day.  She didn't tell me not to run, but just less distance.  She even said I could do the same distance if I just broke it up into more workouts instead of a few longer ones.

It has not recurred this year.  One thing I'm doing differently is squats 3x/week.  It has helped stabilize my knee very well (another story), but when doing them I also raise up on my toes which works the ankles, foot and lower leg.  I can't say for sure this has helped, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is part of the reason I've been P.F. free for over a year.

Oh yeah, I'm about 6 pounds lighter than last year, too which helps I'm sure.

Rich

Hi Kelly,

I'm biased because I work for HealthPartners, but we have a great podiatry department.  Drs. Phannenstien or Boffeli are great (they're surgeons though), but from our website, this guy looks like he specializes in Sports Medicine.  We have a great clinic right off of 35E and Phalen.  http://www.healthpartners.com/locator/practitioner/detail.do?personnelId=6930

I have had PF twice and I never went to a podiatrist, but my family medicine physician referred for physicial therapy where they did a deep tissue massage and "iontophoresis (sp??)" where they electrically pulsed steroids into the bottom of the foot and it worked wonders.  Rest, Ice, and Massage seem to be the remedy.  Good Luck!

I saw Dr. paul Langer (podiatrist) for foot stuff. Love him, and he is a runner and IM athlete.

As far as rehab, I go to IAM, and they have never let me down. :-)

IAM (Institute for Athletic Medicine through Fairview) is where I got my PT too.   I agree, they never let you down.

My very strong recommendation is Dr. Folske in Golden Valley.  Works with elite runners and is a miracle worker.  Guy I know was about to have a knee surgery and a week before he had it, he went to Dr. Folske and within 4 sessions in a one week period, he was running and cancelled the surgery.  I have also went to him with ankle issues and am running injury free again.  His website is http://www.folskeclinic.com/.
